Trojan wrestlers advance to District 3 team semifinals

YORK — They didn’t need magic tricks or bumping wrestlers around to different weights or anything else out of the ordinary.

Chambersburg simply wrestled a really good match to beat Donegal in the District 3 Class 3A team championships first round and then an even better one in the quarterfinals to hand Central York its first loss of the season.

Tuesday night’s victories at Central York vaulted the No. 10 seed Trojans (14-3) into the semifinal round on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Spring Grove against upstart No. 6 seed Elco (13-1). The Raiders defeated Central Dauphin in the first round, 30-29 on criteria D, then edged No. 3 seed Northern York, 33-30. Gettysburg (17-2) and Boiling Springs (17-2) meet in the other semifinal.

The semifinal winners move into the championship match on Saturday and are guaranteed a berth in the PIAA Tournament. The losers will try for either third or fourth place to make states.

Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said, “We finished matches well. Against Central York (12-1) we had two pins inside the last 5 seconds of a period and we got a winning takedown inside the last 10 seconds. And a couple of other guys got leads and finished strong.”

In the quarterfinal’s first bout, at 107, the Panthers’ Ethan Ritchey led early after getting a takedown on a scramble. Brambley got n escape in the first, was ridden the whole second period and Ritchey chose down for the third. Brambley was awarded a stalling point and Ritchey got an escape. Brambley then dug deep to pull in a double-leg shot and finished the move with 0:08 left for a 5-3 win.

Despite a pin by Zach Sherman at 127, Central York held a 17-9 lead after five bouts. But that was it for the Panthers — Chambersburg won the final eight bouts.

Ashton Romberger (139) scored a pin at 5:57, Justin Deneen won 4-0 at 145, Logan Mickey turned his man late in the first period and got the slap at 1:56, Zethan Sleighter used a first-period takedown to win 4-0 at 160, Isaiah Tasker hit 3 takedowns in a 10-0 major at 172, Jaccob Stoner nearly got caught on his back early, but got out of bounds and then pinned his man in 34 seconds, Omar Henchey (215) notched a late takedown for a 4-1 decision and Frank Barrientos put the icing on the cake with a headlock pin at 285.

“I really thought that we matched up better against Central than we did Donegal,” Mentzer said.

In a reverse of the second match, the Trojans did a lot of their scoring early against the Indians (11-3), sweeping to a lead of 28-10. Barrientos, Seabolt and Sherman wrapped up pins, and Brambley and Romberger had tech falls. After a Donegal tech fall, Mickey rolled to a 16-1 tech fall to make it 33-15.

But the Indians rallied with a pin and had three highly regarded kids left. The Trojans were looking for somebody to step up. And it was Tasker, who had lost a close family member last week and missed last weekend’s duals tournament.

Tasker had a 13-10 record, and his opponent, Brady Allessie, was 23-11. In the second period, Tasker blocked a shot and spun behind for a takedown. Allessie got within 3-2 and was stalking a takedown when Tasker spun behind again and ended up taking a 6-3 win, which clinched the team win.

“I knew I had to win; I couldn’t do anything else,” Tasker said. “We’ve had some close matches this year and a couple have come down to me. I just had a good defense for him.

“I feel like this team has improved so much it’s crazy. We think we’re the best team in the district.”

Mentzer said, “Isaiah was the underdog in that one, but we needed one more win and he got it for us. They had three solid kids to finish with, but Isaiah, even with the tough week he’s had, came up big for us.”

NOTES: Double winners for the Trojans were Brambley, Sherman, Romberger, Mickey, Tasker and Barrientos … Chambersburg gave up only 5 pins and scored 8.
