STATE COLLEGE — Monday’s night’s 62-44 Mid Penn Commonwealth win at State College was not just another victory for the Chambersburg boys basketball team.

It was also the 400th career win by head coach Shawn Shreffler, who already has more wins as the program’s coach than anybody else, as he passed Lowell “Doc” Schlichter’s record earlier this season.

“I’m very appreciative of all the players and coaches who have played a role in achieving that number,” Shreffler said. “More than anything, it reflects their commitment and sacrifices and consistency that our program has demonstrated over a long period of time. I’ve been fortunate  to have coached some really special players and it’s that THAT number and my relationships with all of them that I am most grateful for.”

Now in his 26th season as coach of Chambersburg, Shreffler now has a record of 400-248 for a fine winning percentage of .617. His teams have averaged over 15 wins per season.

Monday, the Trojans (13-4, 9-3 MPC) rolled over the Little Lions after leading 31-17 at halftime.

“I was extremely pleased with how the guys executed at the beginning of the game,” Shreffler said. “That’s not easy to do after a long bus ride, but they were locked in and focused on what they needed to do against a very competitive State College team.

“They didn’t settle for just any shot, but instead worked together for great shots. I thought Colton Cornwell did a really nice job of getting J.J. (Kelly) involved early and often and J.J. was incredibly dominant and efficient.”

Kelly led the scoring with 28 points — he has put up at least 20 in 8 of his last 9 games. Landon Buhrman wasn’t far behind with 23 points, which tied his career high. The pair combined for 51 of the team’s 62 points.

Shreffler said, “The effort on the defensive end was really good, too. Josh Rudy did a fantastic job on their best player. As the game wore on, there were moments when SC made some plays and gained a little momentum, but we got back to sharing the ball on offense and getting stops on defense.

“That was highlighted by Landon’s great effort at both ends while playing through sickness.”

For the Little Lions (8-9, 4-8 MPC), Reed Melvin led with 16 points.
