GIRLS BASKETBALL
Shippensburg 55, Greencastle-Antrim 52: A big difference in scoring at the free throw line played a big role in the Greyhounds’ Mid Penn Colonial win over the Blue Devils on Monday night in Shippensburg.
Ship (8-10, 5-7 MPC) made 19 of 25 free throws, including 10-for-10 in the fourth quarter, while Greencastle (7-10, 5-6 MPC) sank only 7 of 16.
The Lady Hounds made a trio of 3-pointers on their way to a 17-8 lead after one period, and still led by 8 at halftime. The Blue Devils made a run in the third quarter to take a 35-32 lead midway through the period.
In the fourth, G-A held a 43-38 lead with 5:14 to go, but Ship hit a three and used free throws to jump in front by 6 points. Meadow Gambacurta hit a 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds left to get G-A to within 3, and the Blue Devils stole the inbounds pass but couldn’t get a shot off.
Ellie Bigler equaled her career high with 13 points for the Blue Devils and had 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Gambacurta put up 11 points, 7 boards, 5 assists and 6 steals, Kiersten Swain scored 9 points and Callie Izer had 5 rebounds.
For Ship, Azula Navarro scored 18 points and Peyton Coy had 17.
