G-A roundup: Boys snap 4-game losing streak

BOYS BASKETBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 49, Northern York 45: The Blue Devils outscored the Polar Bears 9-5 in the final quarter to earn a Mid Penn Colonial victory on Friday night on their home floor.

The teams were tied 40-40 after 3 quarters, but G-A (5-9, 3-5 MPC) got baskets from Carter McCauley and Evan Hill and a foul shot from Alex Albright to lead by 4 with 2:45 left. The Blue Devils called a timeout, then ran off over a minute while playing keep-away. When Northern got the ball back, Noah Parks drew a charge to give his team possession again.

But Greencastle missed a pair of free throws with 0:42 left and the Polar Bears got a putback from Avery Ewer to get to within 47-45. Parks made 1 of 2 free throws, then Kolten Johnson rebounded a Northern miss and made the second of 2 free throws to put G-A up by 4 with 6.9 seconds left.

McCauley led Greencastle with 14 points and Parks contributed 10. The Polar Bears (7-6, 5-4 MPC) got 13 points from Ryland Yinger.

Northern York 50, Greencastle-Antrim 40: The Polar Bears’ pressure defense gave the Blue Devils some problems, and, although G-A hung tough, it could not catch up after falling behind 14-4 in a Mid Penn Colonial game in Dillsburg on Friday night.

Greencastle (6-8, 4-4 MPC) scored the same amount of points as Northern (12-1, 8-1 MPC) in he final 3 periods.

For the game, the Blue Devils — missing point guard Eva Martin — were guilty of 34 turnovers, but they did drop in five 3-pointers to help their cause and played an effective zone defense.

Kiersten Swain popped in 14 points and 6 rebounds to lead G-A, and Sophie Fries added 8 points, 4 boards and 2 blocks. For Northern, Anna Lehman led with 14 points.

Susquehanna Twp. 47, Greencastle-Antrim 24: The Indians received 6 forfeits to make the difference in the Mid Penn Conference dual meet Friday in Harrisburg.

The Blue Devils (0-3) won half of the bouts that were contested and also won two bouts by forfeit.

At 118 pounds, the Blue Devils’ Brandy Trail scored a pin with just 1 second left in the first period. The other G-A win came from Jazmin Corbin at 130, notching a pin in 3:01.

Rowan Shubert (118) and Rachael Graham (142) won forfeits for Greencastle.
