Chambersburg roundup: CV dominates Trojan boys, 45-34

BOYS BASKETBALL
Cumberland Valley 45, Chambersburg 34: The Trojans picked a bad time to have perhaps their worst shooting night of the season and the Eagles took full advantage in a solid Mid Penn Commonwealth win Friday night at a packed CASHS Field House.

J.J. Kelly

Chambersburg (11-3, 7-2 MPC) did not make a 3-pointer all night and was just 2-for-7 at the free throw line. The Trojans at times had trouble getting good looks against CV’s 2-3 zone defense, and when they did, the shots just weren’t falling, especially early.

“Coming off a big loss to Carlisle, CV came out very focused and determined,” Trojan coach Shawn Shreffler said. “On the other hand, I thought we were more hesitant and reactionary, which led to a great start for them.”

The Eagles (14-3, 7-2 MPC) scored the first 9 points of the game and Chambersburg could never get closer than 5 points (at 11-6 early, and 33-28 in the third quarter) the rest of the way.

“We fought to get back in it,” Shreffler said, “but were not efficient offensively, allowing them to stay in their zone. Once we made an adjustment at the half, we were much better. But any momentum gained was typically thwarted by No. 22, especially when he hit those back-to-back threes early in the third quarter.”

No. 22 is Nolan Buzalka, who put up 19 points for the Eagles. Jared Dolimpio added 13 and Creston Austin had 11 for CV. While Cumberland Valley had only 4 players score in the game, Chambersburg had only 3 — J.J. Kelly scored 19, Landon Buhrman had 11 and Josh Rudy 4, as Colton Cornwell was held scoreless.

They were able to get the ball to Kelly in the middle of the zone in the third period, but the Eagles closed that off in the fourth.

Shreffler said, “I thought CV was much better on the glass than us, which hasn’t happened very often this season. This one needs to galvanize us even more, because there is still a ton to play for and provides a great opportunity to get better.”

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Cumberland Valley 50, Chambersburg 30: The Trojans hung tough with the Eagles and were within 2 points in the third quarter, but succumbed to CV in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game Friday night in New Kingstown.

“We played some of our best basketball tonight,” Chambersburg coach Jamiur King said. “Cumberland Valley is a tough place to play, but in the middle of the third quarter, we were within 2 points (28-26). But their pressure was an issue for us late in the game.

CV (8-7, 5-3 MPC) outscored the Trojans (3-9, 2-6 MPC) 17-7 in the first quarter, then finished the game on a 22-4 run to end the game.

“I can’t ask for more from our young ladies,” King said. “We didn’t shoot the ball well, which is something we need to do to stay in games. But at one point, we had three freshmen on the floor holding their own.”

Riley Evans led Chambersburg with 14 points, Selena Warren scored 8 and Maddie Mills added 6. For the Eagles, Sienna Mannis led with 17 points.
