GIRLS BASKETBALL
McConnellsburg 58, Southern Fulton 33. The Lady Spartans faced the Southern Fulton Lady Indians in the first-round game of the Forbes Road Christmas tournament Sunday December 29th and steadily outpaced the Indians to capture the win, their sixth straight and sixth of double-digit margin of victory.
The game was relatively close after one quarter, 12-8, the Spartans leading. At the half, the Spartans continued to hold the same lead, 28-24. After three, the Spartans increased their lead to nine, 40-31. By the mid-fourth quarter the Spartans got the biggest margin to 22 points. The starters took a welcomed seating and the bench got some action to complete the decisive win.
The Spartans (7-2 overall, 1-0 ICC South) put three players in double figures, led by sophomore guard Brookelynn Gelvin with 12 points, then junior guard Serenity Rengifo (11) and senior center Maggie Mellott (10) among the eight Spartans scorers.
Coach Jeff Gelvin noted, “Our girls showed great teamwork, hustle, and patience tonight. They worked the ball up the court with ease, got two Indians to foul out, contained Indians standout (Clair) Harvey, and opened the lead to over 20 while defensively holding the Indians to two points in the fourth quarter.”
Other notables: rebounds: Spartans Maggie Mellott (9) and Lucy Brun (8) were the team’s one/two performers to collectively outbox SF, which grabbed 20% less total rebounds. SF committed nearly three times as many turnovers.
