GIRLS BASKETBALL
McConnellsburg 54, Shade 34. The Lady Spartans traveled to Somerset County to face the Shade Panthers in a non-conference match Monday, December 23rd and cruised to a twenty-point victory, 54-34, and captured their fifth straight win.
The Spartans (6-2 overall, 1-0 ICC South) scoring was led by Janiah Jefferson with game high 18 points, with Maggie Mellott and Serenity Rengifo chipping in nine apiece among the eight Spartans scorers.
The game started out relatively close after one quarter, 14-11 Spartans leading. Then 2½ mins into the second quarter, the Spartans put up three straight three pointers to open up to a 23-11 lead. The Spartans expanded their lead by 15 at the half, 32-17, with a three at the buzzer from Jefferson. After three the Spartans held a similar point lead, 42-29. In the fourth the Spartans outscored the Panthers by more than twice. Coach Jeff Gelvin noted, our girls continued to show good progress at working the ball well up the court, around the horn, and then defensively getting the ball off the board and down court for fast break opportunities.”
Other notables: rebounds: Maggie Mellott (9) and Lucy Brun (7) were top performers to team-collectively outbox Shade. Defensively, Spartan Brookelyn Gelvin continued to show good ball attention by anticipating Shade’s telegraphed passing, effecting forced turnovers and rattled play, and getting steals from inattentive up court dribbling. In the end, Shade turnovers were more than 2:1 to the Spartans’.
