McConnellsburg Handles North Star

GIRLS BASKETBALL

McConnellsburg 42, North Star 30.  The Lady Spartans hosted the North Star Cougars on Tuesday, December 17thfor an ICC cross-divisional game and steadily controlled the scoring to lead each quarter and pick up their third straight win.  The Spartans (4-2 overall, 0-0 ICC South) were led in scoring by junior guard Janiah Lowery with 16 points, then junior forward Serenity Rengifo with 11 points.  

In the closing seconds of the first quarter, Rengifo hit a three-pointer to give the Spartans a two-point lead.  At the half, the Spartans held a one-point lead, 18-17.  Spartans led after three quarters, 31-24.  Most of the fourth quarter the Spartans held a double-digit lead to cruise to a 12-point win.  

Spartans’ scoring: Maggie Mellott 1 3-6 5, Serenity Rengifo 5 0-0 11, Lucy Brun 1 0-0 3, Journie Jefferson 1 1-4 3, Brookelynn Gelvin 1 2-4 4, Janiah Lowery 6 2-2 16, Totals 15 8-16 42

3-point shots — 4 (Lowery 2, Brun 1, Rengifo 1).  

Spartans’ totals:  35 rebounds, 17 turnovers.  Mellott led with 13 rebounds.  FTM% 50%

Cougars’ totals:  20 rebounds, 23 turnovers.
