BOYS BASKETBALL
Chambersburg 56, York Suburban 51: The Trojans held off a quality opponent on the road Friday night in their season opener, which enabled head coach Shawn Shreffler to reach a huge milestone.
Chambersburg defeated the host, York Suburban, by rallying from a 3-point deficit in the fourth quarter.
The victory gave head coach Shawn Shreffler his 388th career victory in his 26th year, which moved him past Lowell “Doc” Schlichter for the all-time lead in wins in the program’s history. Shreffler’s record is now 388-244, a win percentage of .614.
“I’m really proud of this team for going 1-0,” Shreffler said. “Like so many previous teams, they found a way to win, which isn’t always easy to do.
“I’m also extremely fortunate to have coached so many great players and equally amazing young men. Their sacrifices and commitment to the team has created more than a few memorable moments, including this milestone. With the help of some really awesome coaches, we have been able to build a solid program that has been consistently successful.
“Lastly, I’m thankful for my wife and sons for the numerous sacrifices they have made that has allowed me to coach for as long as I have. None of this would be possible without them.”
Colton Cornwell buried four 3-pointers in the first quarter to help Chambersburg to a 21-7 lead after one period. But some foul trouble and some hot shooting by Suburban cut the lead to 31-26 at halftime.
Shreffler said, “We gained a little footing in the third quarter, led by Landon Buhrman, who scored 10 of his 14 points — his activity led to lots of free throw attempts.”
Buhrman was perfect from the foul line — 10-for-10.
“In the fourth, they made a run and got ahead by three,” Shreffler said. “But solid defensive work by Josh Rudy changed the momentum and we took the lead. J.J Kelly was big on the boards in the fourth and scored four huge points in the paint to keep Suburban at bay.”
Cornwell finished with 22 points, Buhrman had 14 and Kelly 13. Kai Stryn led Suburban with 16 points.
Shreffler said, “It was a great win to open the season against a really tough team. They came in 2-0 and played well in front of their home crowd. With the intensity of the game and the foul trouble, we were able to get contributions from a number of guys — some with the first meaningful varsity minutes.”

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Shippensburg 52, Chambersburg 40: The Lady Greyhounds outscored the Trojans 30-14 in the second half to erase a 3-point halftime deficit and claim a victory in a first-round game of the Northern York Tournament on Friday night in the season opener.
The Trojans will play Hanover in the consolation game Saturday at 1:30. Shippensburg will meet the host Polar Bears in the championship game at 3:00.
The Greyhounds had three players in double figures — Peyton Coy scored 17, Lily Weller added 13 and Azula Navarro put up 11.
Weller scored all of her points in the first half, while Navarro had all of hers in the second half and Coy scored all but two of hers in the latter half.
“I thought we played really well,” Chambersburg coach Jamiur King said. “But we ran out of steam. We’re a very young team and I couldn’t have asked more out of them. We had some very good possessions.”
Freshman Maddie Mills led the Trojans with 16 points, which included a trio of 3-point shots. Riley Evans contributed 10 points and 7 rebounds, and Selena Warren added a career-high 9.
“Mills and Evans played well,” King said. “But Shippensburg made the shots when it counted.”
