The area is down to just two fall sports teams still alive in the PIAA Championships, and both will play in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
The Greencastle-Antrim girls volleyball team (20-2), after picking up its first-ever PIAA victory on Tuesday — 3-1 over Conwell Egan — will face Beaver (19-4), the No. 3 team from District 7, in a quarterfinal at Greater Johnstown H.S. at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The winner of that match will take on the winner of 7-1 Mars (19-4) vs. 7-3 Hampton (15-6) in the semifinals on Tuesday evening.
In boys soccer, District 5 champion McConnellsburg (18-3-1) will tangle with 7-2 Our Lady of Sacred Heart (16-3) at Price Field, located at Westmont Elementary in Johnstown, with a start time of 12 noon Saturday. The Spartans got past Halifax on Tuesday, 1-0.
The winner of that game will face either 7-1 Bentworth (20-0) vs. 10-1 Mercyhurst Prep (15-6) in the semifinals on Tuesday.
The other local team to play Tuesday in the first round was the McConnellsburg girls soccer team, which lost a 2-1 heartbreaker in overtime to Seton LaSalle. The Lady Spartans finished with a 19-3-1 record.
