ELLIOTTSBURG — It was a big game for the Greencastle-Antrim seniors and an especially good one for one of those 12-graders.
The Blue Devils, who finished 3-7 (2-6 MPC), were clicking on offense and put up their highest point total of the season Friday night in a 48-35 victory over West Perry in Elliottsburg in a Mid Penn Colonial clash.
G-A’s Carter McCauley put a flourish on an excellent senior season by setting a school record. McCauley caught 10 passes for 160 yards and three touchdowns. That brought his season totals to 73 catches for 1,092 yards and 15 TDs.
His yardage total set a school record, erasing the long-standing numbers by recent Hall of Fame inductee Bill Fitz, who had 952 yards in 1971.
“He was close,” said Blue Devil coach and Carter’s father Devin McCauley, “so on our first play, we called a counter criss-cross flea flicker and we gained about 50 yards and broke the record.
“Carter had a good first half, and they moved a linebacker out of the box to try to help cover him, which allowed us to do well in the running game. It was a tribute to our offensive line and backs and how well they blocked.”
Quarterback Sean Marshall completed 12 of 15 passes for 179 yards, and ran for 78 yards and a score, and running back Blake Reuter rushed for 144 yards on 17 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns.
Both teams moved the ball and put points on the board. Two consecutive scores by the Blue Devils gave them a 40-21 lead in the third quarter, but the Mustangs (4-6, 2-6 MPC) came back with two of their own and trailed only 40-35 in the fourth.
Coach McCauley said, “When we got ahead there we gave up a long pass and a couple of long runs to set them up for touchdowns. But we kept the pressure on them.”
Greencastle put the game away with a drive that ended with Lars Galinanes scoring from 5 yards out.
“It was nice to send the seniors off with a win,” coach McCauley said. “It was a good way to end a season in which we had a lot of adversity.”
