CHAMBERSBURG — Once Chambersburg knocked off a little rust, it was full speed ahead in a District 3 Class 4A first-round girls volleyball match at CASHS Field House on Wednesday night.
The Trojans won the first game over Governor Mifflin 25-17, then made it 2-0 with a 25-20 victory, and closed out the 3-0 win with a 25-17 verdict in game 3. It was the first district playoff win for Chambersburg since 2013.
Chambersburg, the No. 3 seed (17-3), will now host a quarterfinal match on Saturday at 1 p.m. against No. 6 Manheim Township (15-2), which defeated Waynesboro 3-0 on Wednesday (25-14, 25-18, 26-24). The winner will qualify for states.
The Trojans, who had played their last match about 10 days ago, took a little while to get it going.
“We played well all year to set up a playoff game like this, but we were a little rusty early,” Chambersburg coach Ty Frelin said. “They were scrappy and played good defense, plus we had a lot of unforced service errors in the first two sets.
“We had struggled the last two practices getting that edge back into our play, and we finally got there, and I hope we can lock that in for Saturday. But we weren’t sharp to start with. We played through it and made the plays when we needed to.”
Karley Skultety led the Trojans in service points with 10 and in digs with 17. Other stat leaders included Ava Zeigler (38 assists), Alayna Jones (11 kills) and Riley Evans (4 blocks).
In addition, Cami Bender had 8 points, Zeigler had 7, Nizaya Hawkins put down 3 blocks, Evans had 9 kills and Marah Lehman added 8, and Lehman also produced 12 digs.
Frelin said, “I thought Kasey Moser played well at outside hitter. She blocked well and had some timely kills.
“It’s nice that we get to host a quarterfinal match Saturday. We play in an extremely tough league, so if we show up and play to our capabilities, we’ll have a shot to move on.”
