UNIVERSITY PARK — Chambersburg senior Emily Rensch had a good day Monday in the first round of the PIAA Girls Golf Championship.
She will need an even better day Tuesday on the White Course at Penn State University if she wants to place high.
Rensch shot a fine round of 3-over par 75 in the first round, which placed her in a tie for 11th with Elayna Fanelli of Radnor and Jill Burks of Conestoga. The leader, at 4-under par, is Mya Morgan of Elizabeth Forward, who shot 68.
“I thought she played pretty well,” Trojan coach Mark Yost said. “She finished her round really well, with up-and-downs on four of her last five holes. She left a few shots out there, but is in a good position to finish strong tomorrow.”
Rensch had four bogeys, four pars and a birdie on the front nine to shoot 38, then was consistent on the back side with eight pars and one bogey for a 37.
Shippensburg freshman Kaydee Beckenbaugh had a rough day for her first appearance at states. She posted an 88, with nines of 44-44, and she is in 33rd place. She had four double-bogeys on her card.
