Rensch, Beckenbaugh advance in golf postseason

YORK  — Chambersburg senior Emily Rensch and Shippensburg freshman Kaydee Beckenbaugh punched their ticket for the PIAA Championships in golf with their performance at the District 3 Championships on Saturday.

In the girls Class 3A tournament, Rensch improved her Thursday first-round score by 4 strokes, enabling her to move from sixth place to third place. She finished 11 strokes behind the winner, Piper Smith of Manheim Township, and 2 behind the runner-up, Ellie Overly of Warwick.

Rensch shot a 3-over par 75 on Saturday at Honey Run G.C., with nines of 39-36. She birdied Nos. 8, 15 and 16.

“Emily played well both days — she struck the ball well and kept it in play,” Trojan coach Mark Yost said. “But she did struggle a little with her putting. I think if her putting was sharper, she could have contended.”

Beckenbaugh finished one stroke back of Rensch in fourth place after shooting a 79 on Saturday. She had nines of 41-38 and parred the final 7 holes of the back nine.

Both players have qualified for the PIAA Championships at Penn State University’s White Course on Oct. 21-22. Rensch, who has committed to St. Francis, qualified for states two years ago as a sophomore.

Waynesboro’s Abby Byers shot 8 strokes better than in her first round, carding an 85 on Saturday. She finished in 15th place, but only the top 7 and ties qualified for states.

The only area boy to compete Saturday was Tyler Fortney of Waynesboro. He shot the same score as he did in the first round, 79 (41-38), to end up in a tie for 25th place — two strokes over the cut for states.
