Chambersburg roundup: Trojans earn big volleyball win

Chambersburg 3, Wilson 2: The Trojans traveled all the way to Reading to take on a good team and came home with 5-game win over the Bulldogs in non-league play Saturday morning.

The teams split the first 4, with Chambersburg winning the first (25-19) and third (25-13) and Wilson taking No. 2 (25-23 and No. 4 (25-21). But the Trojans pulled through with a decisive 15-9 win in the decider.

Chambersburg (11-3), winners in 10 of its last 11 matches, is ranked No. 6 in District 3 Class 4A and the Bulldogs (8-5) dropped to No. 11.

“What a big win for us today,” Trojan coach Ty Frelin said. “We stuck with it and kept working, and we made some big plays when we needed to.”

The winners spread the stats around. Alayna Jones led in service points with 15, Cami Bender had 9 and Karley Skultety 8. Ava Zeigler racked up 47 assists, and the leaders in digs were Skultety (18), Jones (18) and Marah Lehman (10).

At the net, Lehman scored 13 kills, Riley Evans had 12, Nizaya Hawkins had 11 and Jones 9. Hawkins led in blocks with 4 and Evans had 3.

Frelin said, “Wilson is a good team and they put up a big block. But we covered well and transitioned well to offense quickly and effectively.”

Trojans compete at Carlisle: In what have been the Carlisle Invitational’s best-ever field, Chambersburg was able to place 19th in the team standings of the Girls Challenge race Saturday.

“We were a little humbled today in maybe the most competitive high school meet we’ve ever competed in,” Trojan coach Chris Monheim said. “If you include all the teams, we were 19th out of 65. We are not far away from a big result, but we’ll have to work to improve.”

Padua Academy (Del.) won the division with 150 points and Chambersburg had 493.

For the Trojans, Mady Koons took 45th in 19:55.2, followed by Brook Boone (75th, 20:21.6), Natalie Quinn (124th, 21:06.4), Dana Rosenberry (140th, 21:20.6) and Kaylie Savage (141st, 21:22.7).

In the Girls Champions race, James Buchanan’s Katelyn Clever placed 15th with a time of 20:49.5 and the Rockets were 13th as a team.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Chambersburg takes 11th: The Trojans ran what coach John Ambrosio said was “a B, B+ day,” and placed 11th in a loaded field in the Boys Challenge race at the Carlisle Invitational on Saturday.

“There are a lot of out-of-state powerhouses at this meet and that makes it tougher,” Ambrosio said.

Liam Kirkpatrick had a good day, finishing 14th in 15:59.4. Also scoring for Chambersburg were Kaden Rife in 79th (16:52.7), Aiden Alleman in 86th (16:56.5), Julian Clark in 98th (17:02.1) and Boston Vincenti in 153rd (17:23.9).

Ambrosio said, “Liam ran exceptionally well — top 15 in this event is great. Boston is getting better in every race. With our No. 5 coming around, if we get our 2, 3 and 4 up a little higher, we’ll be formidable.”

Tatnall (Del.) won the team title, while the Trojans were the top District 3 team.

In the Boys Champions race, James Buchanan placed 15th and Shalom Christian took 22nd. For the Rockets, Tristan Hall took 12th with a time of 17:00.
