Despite 35-13 score, G-A plays Susquehanna Twp. tough

GREENCASTLE — Although his team was defeated 35-13 by Susquehanna Township on Friday night at Kaley Field, Greencastle-Antrim football coach Devin McCauley had a lot to be happy about.

“I was proud of our kids — they gave a really good effort,” McCauley said. “Susquehanna (2-0, 1-0 MPC) is a very good football team and it was only 21-6 going into the fourth quarter.

“We played the kind of game we wanted to play — slowed the game down, ran the play clock and got first downs And our defense played sound. But they just have more athletes than us and that made a difference.”

Trailing 21-0 late in the second quarter, the Blue Devils (0-2, 0-1 MPC) ran a trick play — a hook-and-ladder play (QB Sean Marshall threw to Carter McCauley, who lateraled to Blake Reuter, for a 50-yard gain to the Indian 13. Greencastle scored on the next play when Marshall connected with McCauley on a fade route into the corner of the end zone.

The Blue Devils got the ball to start the third quarter and put together a tremendous drive of 18 plays to take the ball down the field. On the 17th play, they had a touchdown called back because of an illegal shift, and on fourth down a pass fell incomplete.

“An 18-play drive in high school football is pretty rare,” coach McCauley said. “It took up most of the quarter, but we just couldn’t finish it off. Then they got two touchdowns to go ahead 35-6.”

G-A did score again late on a run by Marshall.

Marshall hit on 13 of 23 passes, including 11 to McCauley for 126 yards and a TD. Reuter ran 13 times for 74 times as Greencastle piled up 178 yards on the ground.

“The offensive line had a very good game collectively,” coach McCauley said. “I’m very proud of these kids and the way everybody played tonight.”
