SASHS to Induct First HOF Class in Five Years

By Michael Peters

The last class inducted into the SASHS Athletic Hall of Fame was in 2019. As the Hall of Fame committee began considering the 2020 class, Covid shut down the process and inductions were indefinitely put on hold. Following the shutdown, key members of the committee stepped down and one of the original founders of the committee passed away.

The SASHS Athletic Hall of Fame was organized in the mid 2000’s by Lloyd Heller, former baseball coach John Bartholow, former softball coach Bobby Davis, former athletic director Mick McNaughton and Tammy Butler Sonntag. The first class was inducted in 2007 and each year, the annual event was a highlight of the fall athletic season. After the pandemic, the committee needed direction. Former girls’ basketball coach Megan Carr and Sonntag recruited new members to get the program started again and they are excited to announce the 2024 SASHS HOF Class has been selected and will be inducted August 30th in the SASHS cafeteria. The event is by reservation only and current HOF members and the new inductees will be recognized at halftime of the varsity football game versus Hershey. The 2024 class includes:

Andy Enfield (Class of 1987)

You can’t discuss SASHS basketball without mentioning Andy Enfield. Enfield was both a standout on the court and in the classroom. He led the Greyhound basketball team to one of their most successful seasons in 1987, a runner-up finish in the District III tournament and a state playoff victory. He was a Patriot-News Big 15 selection, Mid Penn Division III MVP, and Mid Penn All Star Classic MVP. The most stunning statistic from his high school hoops career is scoring 1,135 points in only two years and that achievement was prior to the 3-pt line. Enfield was a finalist for the coveted Travers Award and was both a team MVP and captain for the Greyhounds. He earned an academic scholarship to Johns Hopkins University where he was an All-American. Enfield still holds the NCAA record for free throw percentage with 92.5% of shots made. He has coached at both the NCAA Division 1 and NBA levels, including as an assistant coach for the Milwaukee Bucks and Boston Celtics. His college coaching career began as an assistant at Florida State, then he was hired as head coach at Florida Gulf Coast where he led the #15 seed Eagles to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament in 2013. Enfield left FGC for the University of Southern California. He was the head coach at USC for 10 years and most recently was hired to lead Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Texas.

He was named a 1st team Mid Penn All Star three times in basketball and twice in football and was the SASHS all-time leading scorer in basketball with 1,258 points until Jayden Statum broke his record in 2022. Van Scyoc was captain of both the football and basketball teams during his SASHS athletic career and twice named a Carlisle Sentinel 1st Team All Star in basketball and three times a Public Opinion 1st team All Star. As a Greyhound, he averaged 17.2 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.. After high school, Van Scyoc played basketball at Shippensburg University, serving as captain his senior year. He was recently named head coach of the Greyhound boys basketball program.

Neely Spence Gracey (Class of 2008)
Just like the name Enfield is synonymous with Shippensburg basketball; the name Spence is forever connected to Shippensburg running. Neely Spence Gracey ran into the record books as a standout athlete in cross country and track. She was a two-time PIAA AAA state champion in the 1,600 meters and Carlisle Sentinel Athlete of the Year in 2008. Gracey won the 2008 two-mile national championship at the Nike Outdoor Nationals. She recorded the fourth fastest 5K time nationally at the Foot Locker Nationals in 2007 and was the Northeast Region Foot Locker Cross Country Champion as both a junior and senior. Her fastest mile time in high school was a blistering 4:48 and she recorded a two-mile record at 10:20:05. Gracey finished her SASHS career with two PIAA Class AAA cross country titles and two state track medals.

She ran in college at Shippensburg University for her father (legendary coach Steve Spence) where she continued her dominance in the sport. Gracey was the most accomplished distance runner in PSAC history. She won eight NCAA Division II titles, 4 PSAC Championships, 4 NCAA Athletic Region Championships, and was named an all-American 11 times.
