GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Cumberland Velley 3, Chambersburg 2: The Eagles prevailed in the fifth set to thwart an impressive comeback attempt by the Trojans in a Mid Penn Commonwealth barnburner Tuesday night in New Kingstown.
CV slipped into a 2-0 lead with wins in the first two games, 25-23 and 25-19. But Chambersburg came back to win the next two, 25-18 and 25-16, and grab momentum. But the Eagles turned it around and took the fifth set, 15-8.
“This was a great, hard-fought match between two quality teams,” Trojan coach Ty Frelin said. “Neither team gave up.”
Alayna Jones had a monster night for Chambersburg (1-1, 0-1 MPC), totaling 20 service points, 20 kills and 20 digs. Ava Zeigler posted 44 assists, 8 points and 15 digs.
Marah Lehman led in kills with 21, and also had 6 points. Karley Skultety led in digs with 26. Kacey Moser recorded 2 blocks, Kaylie Stull had 6 points and Cami Bender contributed 15 digs.
Frelin said, “We fought hard to win the third and fourth sets, but then made too many mistakes in the fifth. We proved to ourselves that we can compete with anyone.”
FIELD HOCKEY
Cumberland Valley 10, Chambersburg 1: The Eagles bolted to a 6-0 lead by halftime and claimed the win over the Trojans in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game Tuesday afternoon at Trojan Stadium.
In its season opener, Chambersburg tried to withstand heavy pressure from CV.
“The first half, they kept us on our weak side,” Trojan coach Kelsey Baker said. “We adjusted and started swinging the ball to the stronger right side, and Jaxin Frazer and Bella Leeking were able to have some breakaways.”
In the third quarter, Frazer had one of those breakaways, drew the defense to her and made a nice pass to Kendall Flory, who sent the ball into the cage.
Baker said, “We were more aggressive with our attack in the last two quarters. Addy Hollenshead had 24 saves in goal, and Maddie Predko, Julia Elhajj and Amora Lopez also had some beautiful defensive saves on the line. The girls knew this game was against a highly-skilled team and they never hung their heads once, and continued to attack for all 60 minutes.”
