TD with 8 seconds left lifts Waynesboro over Blue Devils

WAYNESBORO — In a wild back-and-forth game between two rivals Friday night, Waynesboro threw the last punch and was able to top Greencastle-Antrim in a season-opening football game at Buchanan Auto Park.

The Indians scored with 8 seconds left on a 15-yard run by quarterback Rashawn Fraser-Hewitt to pull out a 30-27 victory over the Blue Devils in a non-league contest.

Greencastle had just taken the lead with 1:10 left when quarterback Sean Marshall connected with Carter McCauley for a 20-yard TD reception to give G-A a 27-23 lead.

“The kids battled and never gave up,” Greencastle coach Devin McCauley said. “We had the momentum in the first half (12-2 lead), but just couldn’t close the deal.

“Hats off to Waynesboro — they made the last play to win the game. We’ll regroup and get after it.”

Indians coach Mark Saunders said, “We were fortunate to win; we played terrible in the first half, but kept plugging away until we made some plays  to get us going. It was a good win, but we have some work to do. I still like my guys and think we can be a spoiler this year.”

The Blue Devils jumped ahead 12-0 in the first quarter when McCauley snagged a pass for 13 yards from Marshall and Blake Reuter had a TD run from 15 yards out.

Waynesboro went ahead with two touchdowns in the third period — a 12-yard run by Tank Benedict and an interception return for a score by Anthony Auscherman.

When Ben Williams put up a 62-yard run, the Indians held a 23-12 advantage early in the fourth.

But the Blue Devils made their own charge, scoring on a 1-yard plunge by Lars Galinanes and MCauley’s second TD catch.

McCauley ended up with 9 catches for 161 yards and two TDs. Marshall had a nice debut, completing 15 of 21 passes for 237 yards, but he was intercepted three times. Reuter led G-A on the ground with 51 yards.

The Blue Devils host Susquehanna Township on Friday at 7, while Waynesboro hosts Gettysburg at 7.
