Greencastle remains alive in the Pennsylvania State Little League Tournament with a 2-1 win over St. Mary’s at Newville on Thursday night. It will play Tri-Town, which lost to Back Mountain 4-1.
The game was tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Greer Barkdoll led off with a booming double to right field. Ryan Emlet sacrificed Barkdoll to third, and Chase Cordell followed with a game-winning single to send Greencastle to the next round.
St. Mary’s got on the board in the top of the third on an RBI fielders choice from Richie Herr to take a 1-0 lead.
Greencastle tied it in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kolston Piper led off with a single and came around to score on Bryce King’s double to even the score at 1-1.
Piper led Greencastle, going 2 for 2 in the game.
Pitching dominated on both sides. Bryce King pitched the first three innings for Greencastle, allowing a run on four hits. Asher Horst pitched the final three innings to pick up the win.
The most significant moment in the game occurred in the top of the fifth when St. Mary’s loaded the bases with nobody out on singles by Doc Chapman and Cael Stouffer and a walk. Horst then struck out the next three to get out of the jam.
Leo Simbak went the first 4 2/3 innings for St. Mary’s, allowing just one run on four hits, two walks, and nine strikeouts.
It was the second walk-off against St. Mary’s, as they lost to Northern Lebanon on a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh on Wednesday.
Greencastle will play Tri-Town Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in another must-win game. The game can be heard on Mid Penn Broadcasting.
