BASEBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 1, Big Spring 0: Ben Horst put together an excellent pitching outing and carried the Blue Devils to a Mid Penn Colonial victory over the Bulldogs in Newville on Tuesday afternoon.
Horst went the distance, allowing only 2 hits and zero walks while striking out 9 Big Spring batters. He got through 7 innings with just 76 pitches — 57 for strikes.
“He commanded both sides of the plate and was in total control,” G-A coach Eric Shaner said. “And he needed to be, because we did almost nothing on offense. Ethan Ford (catcher) called a good game and our defense played well.”
The Bulldogs’ Brady Singer also pitched well, giving up 6 hits and 2 walks and fanning 5.
In the top of the second inning for Greencastle (9-8, 6-7 MPC), the first two batters made outs. Garrett Decker then singled to centerfield, followed by a ground base hit to left by Briggs Remenick. A double to center by Logan Shifflett plated Decker with the game’s only run.
“At this point, we’ll take a win any way we can,” Shaner said. “In one inning, we had a leadoff double and got him to third on a bunt, then we struck out twice. Great teams find a way to get that runner in.”
SOFTBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 8, Big Spring 4: The Blue Devils scored 5 runs in the second inning, keyed by a 2-run home run by Zhen Reuter, and handed the Bulldogs (11-7) a Mid Penn Colonial defeat on Tuesday at home.
Greencastle (13-3, 11-2 MPC) can finish up in a tie for first place in the Colonial with Northern if it can defeat West Perry on Thursday. Northern has finished division play with a 12-2 record.
In the bottom of the first inning, Caroline Logsdon slugged a solo homer, her first of the year for the Blue Devils. In the 5-run second, Kaidyn Zimmerman was hit by a pitch and scored on an error, then Reuter hit her first homer of the season to make it 4-0. Logsdon singled, stole second and scored on a hit by Meadow Gambacurta, who raced home on a double by Makayla Jerin.
Jerin was 3-for-4 and Logsdon and Gambacurta each had 2 hits.
Kiersten Swain pitched the first 6 innings and allowed 6 hits and one earned run. Zimmerman pitched a hitless seventh inning.
