Chambersburg 9, Altoona 5: The Trojans had their best offensive game of the season Thursday evening at Greene Township Park and handed the Mountain Lions a Mid Penn Commonwealth defeat.

Chase Stenger had a big day at the plate for Chambersburg (4-9, 2-7 MPC), going 3-for-3 with 2 runs and 3 RBIs, including a 3-run home run in the second inning that wiped out the 4-0 lead Altoona (9-6, 5-5 MPC) had taken in the top of the first inning.

“This was one of those games where I was really happy with the way our guys responded after falling behind early,” Trojan coach Scott Folmar said. “They did a nice job of working themselves back into the game.”

Brady Deneen was 3-for-4 with a double at the leadoff position, Joey Diaz was 2-for-3, Tyler Brechbiel was 2-for-4 with 2 runs batted in, and Jake Folmar knocked in a pair of runs.

Cole Yeager started for the Trojans and went 4 innings, giving up all 5 of the Mountain Lions’ runs (3 earned). Kamden Mongan threw the final 3 innings to earn a save — he gave up 3 hits and a walk, but no runs.

“Cole didn’t have his best stuff, but he settled down for his last three innings and got us to the fifth,” Folmar said. “And Kamden came in and did a nice job, working out of some trouble.”

In Chambersburg’s 5-run second, Diaz led off with a single and Folmar followed with a bunt hit. After an out, Brechbiel singled in a run, and Stenger followed with his home run. Deneen then doubled, Aaron Vasquez singled to chase courtesy runner Logan Draper to third, and Draper scored when Vasquez attempted a steal of second and the throw was off the mark.

In the fourth inning, the Trojans loaded the bases with one out on base hits by Stenger and Deneen and a walk to Evan Brown. A fielder’s choice grounder by Ceagan Truett brought in a run and, later, Folmar walked with the bases loaded to make it 7-5.

Chambersburg padded the lead with another two-spot in the sixth. An error, a base hit by Diaz and a sacrifice fly by Folmar brought in the first run and an RBI single by Brechbiel plated the final run.

Coach Folmar said, “We swung the bats well today, all through the lineup. And we got some productive outs when we needed them to help us score some of the runs.”

Chambersburg 12, Altoona 1: The Trojans, already leading 5-1, piled up 7 runs in the top of the fifth inning to run away from the Mountain Lions in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game on the road Thursday afternoon.

Chambersburg (11-3, 6-3 MPC) rapped out 16 hits, which included home runs from Karley Skultety, Morgan Lehman and Samantha Paetow, and doubles by Paetow, Skultety and Bree Paetow.

For Skultety and Lehman, the HRs were their first of the season, while Paetow has hit 4 dingers in her last 5 games.

“We started a little slow today, but heated up pretty quickly,” Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. “It was another long trip and we took care of business.”

Sam Paetow was 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs, Bree Paetow was 3-for-4 with 2 runs batted in, and Skultety and Lehman each had 2 hits and a pair of runs knocked in. Bree Paetow stole two bases, giving her 50 in less than 2 years.

“She’s on a great pace to swipe 100 before her career here is over,” coach Skultety said.

Kori Leedy (9-2) pitched the first 4 innings to get the win, allowing 3 hits and striking out 3. Saleen Null threw a hitless fifth.

Skultety said, “The girls continue to have great energy and are a fun group to be around. I hope we get these next six games in, because it’s important for us to get ready for the playoffs.”

GIRLS LACROSSE
Red Land 20, Chambersburg 2: A strong Patriots team rolled over the Trojans in a non-league contest in Lewisberry on Thursday evening.

Both of the goals for Chambersburg (2-11) were produced by Reagan Barrett, while Ellie Sarvis notched an assist. Barrett leads the team with 27 goals and 10 assists.

Brianna Keefer-Fanny took over as the goalie just before halftime and ended up making a career-high total of 8 saves.

Red Land is 10-5.
