SOFTBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 11, Boiling Springs 0: Kiersten Swain came within one batter of pitching a perfect game, yet still ended up with a no-hitter in the Blue Devils’ romp over the Bubblers in a Mid Penn Colonial game Thursday afternoon in Boiling Springs.
Swain, a freshman, struck out 14 batters and did not walk any in her 6 innings of work. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, a Bubblers’ batter hit a ground ball to third base that glanced off the fielder’s glove for an error.
“She was dialed in,” Greencastle coach Mark DeCarli said. “Her ball was moving and she was hitting her spots. She blew it past them and she also kept them off-balance.”
Swain(2-0) struck out the first 6 batters she faced, had at least 2 strikeouts in every inning but one and struck out the side in the first, second and sixth innings.
Meanwhile, the offense of the Blue Devils (9-2, 7-1 MPC) racked up 12 hits. Meadow Gambacurta was 3-for-4 with a home run (2-run shot in the sixth) and 3 RBIs, and Caroline Logsdon was 3-for-3 with a double. Kindal Rice went 2-for-3 with 2 runs batted in.
BASEBALL
Boiling Springs 9, Greencastle-Antrim 3: The Blue Devils keep having trouble staying above .500, dropping a Mid Penn Colonial game to the Bubblers in a home contest Thursday afternoon.
Greencastle (6-6, 3-5 MPC) has not won or lost more than 2 games in a row this season.
The Blue Devils’ problem Thursday was handing out too many free bases. G-A pitchers issued 10 walks — including five with the bases loaded to bring in a run — and also hit 3 batters.
“We fought and battled at the plate and had eight hits against a decent pitcher,” Greencastle coach Eric Shaner said. “But we did strike out seven times and they kept getting walks and bloop hits.”
Avery Horst was 2-for-3 and drove in a run for G-A, Ryan Farrow and Jarek Szaflarski each went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Garrett Decker hit a double.
