G-A roundup: Track & field teams move to 4-0

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD
Greencastle-Antrim 102, Gettysburg 48: The Blue Devils kept their slate clean by romping over the Warriors on Tuesday afternoon in a Mid Penn Colonial meet at Kaley Field.

Jaylynn Schmuck had a big day for Greencastle (4-0, 4-0 MPC), taking first in the long jump (16-0) and triple jump (35-0.5), while running on 2 winning relay teams — anchoring the 4 x 100 with their time of 51.9 and leading off the 4 x 400 team that ran a time of 4:14.8.

Claire Paci captured the 800 (2:27.2) and 1600 (5:30.6) and anchored the 4 x 400. Mary Murray placed first in the 100 (12.9) and 200 (27.8) and was on the 4 x 100 squad.

Bailey Hurley was a double winner in the field, taking the shot put (30-3.75) and discus (128-3).

Other individual winners for the Blue Devils were Anna Sullivan (400, 1:03.4), Sophia Bitner (high jump, 4-6), Piper Linn (pole vault, 10-6) and Lily Kauffman (javelin, 106-6).

BOYS TRACK & FIELD
Greencastle-Antrim 93, Gettysburg 57: Picking up wins in 11 events and showing team depth enabled the Blue Devils to remain unbeaten with a Mid Penn Colonial win over the Warriors on Tuesday at Kaley Field.

Perhaps the best event for G-A (4-0, 4-0 MPC) was the javelin, where they went 1-2-3, with Conner Wright throwing 159-4, Blake Diller hitting 154-7 and Chase Davidson throwing it 153-8.

Connor Rennekamp picked up wins in the shot put (42-1) and discus (122-7).

Greencastle faired well on the track, with 7 wins. Hayden Parks led the way with wins in the 800 (1:56.7), 1600 (4:44.7) and 3200 (10:71.1) races.

Other victories came from Nolan Carr in the 200 (23.5), Mason Gelsinger in the 300 hurdles (44.4) and the 4 x 800 and 4 x 400 relays, with Parks anchoring the latter team.

 

BASEBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 7, James Buchanan 5: The Blue Devils posted 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to flip a 5-4 lead by the Rockets and earn a big Mid Penn Colonial victory Tuesday afternoon in a home game.

Greencastle (6-5, 3-4 MPC) loaded the bases with one out on walks to Jarek Szaflarski and Ethan Ford around a base hit by Carter McCauley. Parker Funk singled to centerfield to score two runs and give G-A a 6-5 lead. Then courtesy runner Cole Barnhart scored the last run when he tagged up and beat the throw home on a foul pop-up.

“We got home late last night from Hershey and got down 3-0 right away today,” Blue Devil coach Eric Shaner said. “But the guys went after it business as usual and never got down. The relief pitchers kept us in the game.”

Cam Niland started the game, but had a rough first inning. Jackson Bostic (2.2 innings, 7 Ks, 5 walks, 2 runs), winner Ben Horst (2.1 innings with one hit) and McCauley (spotless 7th inning) finished the game. Jake Miller started and went 5 innings for the Rockets (5-5, 3-5 MPC) and had 8 strikeouts and 2 walks while allowing 4 earned runs. Reliever Drew Crouse took the loss.

For Greencastle, McCauley was 4-for-4, including a double and a triple, and scored 3 runs. Funk was 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs and Avery Horst was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in. Ford and Logan Shifflett also drove in runs.

Miller was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs and Crouse produced 2 runs knocked in for the Rockets.

Shaner said, “It was a gritty, character win. We’re starting to make adjustments at the plate and I’m proud of them.

SOFTBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 14, James Buchanan 2: The Blue Devils scored in 4 of the 5 innings, including 7 runs in the fourth inning, to hand the Rockets a Mid Penn Colonial defeat Tuesday afternoon in Mercersburg.

Kaidyn Zimmerman earned the win, allowing only 3 hits and one earned run, while striking out 10 batters and walking 2.

At the plate, Makayla Jerin put up a 4-for-4 game, including a double and 2 runs batted in, to lead Greencastle (8-2, 6-1 MPC).

Kylie Kerns belted a three-run home run for G-A and Zhen Reuter collected 3 RBIs. Annika Gaus had 2 hits and a pair of RBIs and Mackenzie Wingert also had 2 hits and drove in a run.

For James Buchanan (4-7, 2-5 MPC), Hannah Nagy hit a double, while Lily Wiley and Brook Sanchez contributed runs batted in.
