Eagles leave no doubt in 10-0 baseball win over Trojans

SCOTLAND — From the first pitch to the last, Cumberland Valley put its stamp on a Mid Penn Commonwealth baseball game at Greene Township Park on Monday afternoon.

The result — a 10-0 win in five innings over Chambersburg — was about as complete as it could be.

The Eagles (2-0, 1-0 MPC) struck for 3 runs in the first inning, piled up seven more in the top of the fifth and held the Trojans to just one hit.

“They came out from the first pitch swinging the bats,” Chambersburg coach Scott Folmar said. “And they played hard for all five innings.”

Joey Diaz started on the mound for the Trojans (2-1, 0-1 MPC) and his first pitch was sent into right-center by Alex Sauve for a hit. Diaz threw away a potential double-play ball, then Kaden Schoenly singled in a run. A misplayed fly ball to right and a base hit by Eli Bryant each brought in runs for a 3-0 lead.

Four of CV’s seven first-inning batters hit the first pitch thrown to them — three had hits and the fourth produced an error.

“We kicked around a couple, and weren’t ourselves on defense today,” Folmar said. “And good teams like this will take advantage of that every time.”

Diaz did settle down and kept the score at 3-0 until the fifth inning, when the Eagles put the game away.

He walked the first two batters, which brought Ryan Schellhase on in relief. But the next three batters produced a walk, a two-run double by Bryant, and another two-run double by Ace Perry. Two outs and a single later, Colin Basehoar ripped a triple to right field for an RBI and a double crushed to center by Schoenly brought in the 10th run.

Meanwhile, Cumberland Valley left-hander Ryan Remetta breezed through the Trojans’ lineup. In his five innings, he allowed just one hit, one walk, struck out seven and set Chambersburg down 1-2-3 in all but the second inning.

Folmar said, “Their guys were jumping on the first pitch. Our guys were taking first-pitch strikes and then swinging at curveballs. We seemed to be behind in the count in almost every at-bat. We did not have many good at-bats.”

In the second, Jason Cunha drew a one-hit out walk and Brady Deneen followed with his team’s only hit, a line drive into center. But Remetta worked out of the jam with a strikeout (after the count began 3-0), and a fly out.
