SOFTBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 16, Bermudian Springs 0: The offense was on fire and the pitching was also in good form, leading the Blue Devils to a convincing non-league, 4-inning win over the Eagles on Wednesday afternoon on the road to open their season.
Already leading 8-0, G-A put up 8 more runs in the top of the fourth.
Makayla Jerin had a big start to the season, going 4-for-4, with 4 doubles (2 in the fourth inning), and driving in 5 runs. Meadow Gambacurta went 3-for-4 with a double and 4 runs batted in. Leadoff hitter Caroline Logsdon was 3-for-3 and Kindal Rice knocked in a pair of runs.
Mackenzie Wingert was strong on the mound, pitching all 4 innings, allowing only 3 hits and no walks, and striking out 3.
BASEBALL
Bermudian Springs 2, Greencastle-Antrim 0: The Blue Devils could not break through for any runs and dropped a non-league game to the Eagles in their season opener on a windy Wednesday afternoon in Greencastle.
Bermudian Springs scored one run off starter Landon Huth in the fifth inning and one off Carter McCauley in the seventh. Huth (6), Avery Horst (3) and McCauley (3) combined for 12 strikeouts, but also issued 8 walks.
G-A coach Eric Shaner said, “Bermudian is a very good baseball team, but we have to get better from this one. There is a lot of room for growth.”
Garrett Decker and Logan Shifflett produced the Blue Devils’ only base hits.
“We hit the ball hard several times and looked like they were in the gap, but the wind held them up and they caught them,” Shaner said. “The wind, which was over 30 miles per hour, didn’t do either team any favors. And they played tremendous defense.”
