PIAA pairings announced in basketball, wrestling

MECHANICSBURG — Sunday, the PIAA announced the pairings for its state tournaments in basketball and wrestling, so four local basketball teams and one area wrestler now know their opponents.

— In boys Class 6A basketball, Chambersburg (19-6), the District 3 runner-up, will host the No. 7 team from District 1, Central Bucks East (19-7). The game is slated for 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 9.

The winner will then play the winner of the first-round game between 11-1 Parkland (21-5) vs. 1-10 Plymouth-Whitemarsh (17-10) in the second round on Wednesday, March 13.

— Greencastle-Antrim (20-6), fourth in District 3, must travel to Pittsburgh to face District 7’s third-place team, Shaler (23-3), in a first-round game on Friday, March 8, at 5 p.m. (it was originally slated for 6 p.m.)

The winner will take on the winner of the game between 3-1 Mechanicsburg (20-5) vs. 7-7 Gateway (18-8).

— Southern Fulton, which placed third in District 5 in Class 1A, will play in the PIAA’s first round Friday. The Indians (14-11) will play at District 9 runner-up Clarion (17-9) at 7 p.m.

The winner will meet either 7-1 Imani Christian (14-10) or 9-5 Union (14-11) in a second round game next Tuesday.

— Southern Fulton’s girls also placed third in District 5 and the Indians (16-9) will play District 3 champion Linville Hill (21-1) on Saturday at 5:30 at Warwick H.S.

The winner will meet the winner between 2-2 Susquehanna (7-16) and 4-3 Lourdes Regional (16-9) in the second round Tuesday.

— In wrestling, Chambersburg 215-pounder Aiden Hight, the District 3 champion, was seeded No. 4 among five regional champions. He gets a bye in the pigtail round, which begins Thursday at 4 p.m. Hight (32-3) will then take on the winner of a pigtail bout between Brady Kelly of Unionville (38-11) vs. Geno Calgaro of Canon-McMillan (21-1).

Should Hight win, he would wrestle in the quarterfinals, which begin Friday at 2:15. He’d face the winner between Rocco Serafini of Central Mountain (32-5) vs. Kurtis Crossman of Easton (37-10).

The top 3 seeds were Dillon Bechtold of Owen J. Roberts (38-0), Caleb Marzolino of Abington Heights (36-2) and Jake Conroy of Ringgold (42-2).
