YORK — York Suburban took the lead late in the first quarter and never gave it up.

The Trojans defeated Greencastle-Antrim 52-43 Wednesday night on Suburban’s home court to win third place in the District 3 Class 5A boys basketball tournament.4

The Blue Devils (20-7) will now have more than a week off before opening play in the PIAA State Tournament next Friday. Greencastle will travel to the Pittsburgh area to play the District 7 third-place team, either Shaler or Thomas Jefferson. Suburban (21-7) will host the fourth-place District 7 team.

G-A coach Todd Stephens said, “York Suburban was a tough team to prepare for with just one day of practice. They switched a lot on defense, and it made them a tough team to prepare for.”

Greencastle got 8 points from Conner Wright in the first quarter and led early, but a 3-pointer by Kai Stryhn gave the Trojans their first lead at 12-9,

In the second quarter, a batch of turnovers by the Blue Devils gave York Suburban extra possessions and it took advantage. knocking down a trio of 3-pointers to take a 29-21 lead into halftime. G-A stayed within reach because Jordan Hunt scored on a drive and hit a pair of threes in the period.

The Trojans led 33-23 early in the third quarter before Greencastle rallied. Wright scored a basket and Eli Sterling nailed a 3-pointer. After a Trojan foul shot, Hunt dropped in a 3-pointer and Sterling hit a pair of free throws and G-A trailed only 34-33 with 2:30 remaining.

In the fourth, after a rebound basket by Sterling got the Blue Devils within 3 at 40-37, Trent Weinstein stole the ball and scored for Suburban, and after another Greencastle turnover, Mehki Rhoades hit a layup through traffic to jump the margin to 44-37, and a 3-pointer by Kai Stryn with 2:30 left was a killer shot, making it 47-37.

“Down the stretch, we had some costly turnovers,” Stephens said. “We went over a lot of things with the guys, but maybe we could have done a better job to prepare them.”

Hunt led Greencastle with 14 points, Wright scored 13 and Sterling contributed 12. Kai Stryn tallied 21 to lead Suburban, and Rismiller chipped in 13.
