Trojan wrestlers end dual season on high note with upset

CHAMBERSBURG — A little bit of lineup switching at the start of the match — that seemed innocuous at the time — turned out to play a big role.

Chambersburg pulled out a 31-27 Mid Penn Commonwealth wrestling victory over Cedar Cliff at CASHS Field House on Thursday night when the Colts did not have a wrestler available to collect a forfeit win at 107 in the final bout.

Isaiah Tasker

The favored Colts (14-6, 1-5 MPC) bumped up stud 107-pounder Aiden Herndon to 114 in the first bout of the night, knowing Chambersburg (7-8, 2-4 MPC), which sent out Cody Seabolt at 114, did not have 107-pounder Ben Hoover available.

“They weren’t confident that their other kid could beat Cody, so they moved Herndon up,” Trojan coach Matt Mentzer said. “We were trying to get the other matchup, because Herndon is tough. But after that, a whole lot of other things had to happen to make that move work in our favor … and they all did.”

Four bouts were particularly important for Chambersburg:

— 121. Zach Sherman trailed the Colts’ unbeaten Kavin Muyleart 3-0 after two periods. But Sherman escaped, then pushed Muyleart for a stalling point, and finally, with 10 seconds left, scored a takedown to pull out the win, 4-3.

— 145. Logan Mickey bumped up a weight and earned a 4-2 decision over Jackson Wentz. Mickey had a takedown in the first and led 2-1 to start the third, and he chose neutral. Instead of simply holding Wentz off, Mickey secured the clinching takedown with 50 seconds remaining.

— 160. Noah Valentine, knowing the Trojans needed bonus points, turned Erik Schriver to his back and scored a pin with just 1.9 seconds left in the first period. That gave the Trojans their first lead of the night, 22-18.

— 172. Isaiah Tasker controlled the pace against the Colts’ P.J. Dent and took a 3-0 victory. Tasker rode Dent the entire second period to keep the bout scoreless. He then escaped with 1:05 left and didn’t back off, adding a takedown late to seal the win, just his fourth of the season.

“I’ve seen that guy before and he’s really fast,” Tasker said. “So I wrestled a little conservatively instead of being too aggressive. I know there was a lot of pressure on me for sure, and I didn’t really feel sure (about the win) until I got that last takedown.”

Mentzer said, “I’m ecstatic about Tasker. He has worked his way into the lineup and I’m very happy for him. I don’t think he knew the magnitude of his match.

“Sherman just hung in there and gave himself a chance to win, and then followed through and finished it. Mickey was the same thing — we needed a takedown to win and he just wanted it more. Valentine did what he was supposed to do, and on Senior Night, too.”

Chambersburg also received a pin from Ashton Romberger at 133, an 11-2 major decision from Tyler Frye, who bumped up to 152, and a pin by Aiden Hight at 215 that clinched the victory by making it 31-21.

The Colts won by forfeit at 285, but the final bout, at 107, went into the books as a no contest, ensuring the Trojans’ win.

“I think that’s the way I expected us to wrestle all year,” Mentzer said. “I think we wrestled different tonight than we had all year. It was fun to see.”

NOTES: Chambersburg now has 3 weeks off before beginning the individual postseason, Feb. 17 at Mechanicsburg for the sectional tournament … The Colts were ranked No. 13 in District 3 before Thursday, so they’ll be hoping to stay in the top 16 and qualify for the district team event.

MIDDLE SCHOOL: Chambersburg crushed Cedar Cliff 83-5 in the middle school meet Thursday to end its season with a 9-6 record … It was the 100th victory under head coach Craig Hight, who has been there for 10 years.
