Trojans’ Hight stymied in quest for Trojan Wars title

CHAMBERSBURG — Chambersburg senior Aiden Hight advanced to the 215-pound final of the 9th annual MyHOUSE Trojan Wars wrestling tournament at CASHS Field House on Saturday night, but was denied by a familiar foe.

Dillon Bechtold of Owen J. Roberts, who was named the tourney’s Outstanding Wrestler, hung a 16-2 major decision on Hight. It was the second time they have met this year and Bechtold bettered Hight both times.

Bechtold and Hight entered the bout ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the state in Class 3A.

Off the opening whistle, Hight tried a throw, but Bechtold countered it and Hight had to take a few minutes after he was dropped out of bounds. Bechtold scored a takedown with 25 seconds left in the first period to lead 2-0. But he then slowly built the lead, producing four takedowns and two nearfalls over the final two periods.

The Trojans’ only other placewinner in the tournament was Zach Sherman, who took sixth place at 121 pounds. Chambersburg finished 13th in the 51-team event.

Bald Eagle Area crowned three champions and captured the team title with 181.5 points.

The best match of the finals came at 107, when Tanner Guenot of Bald Eagle erased a lead by Max Tancini of Perkiomen Valley in the late going, then scored the winning takedown from a restart on their feet on a snap and spin with 0:07 left, and he did it with three seconds to spare to win 7-6.

Owen J. Roberts also posted three champions, with Bechtold’s brother Dean Bechtold winning at 185 and Sam Gautreau taking the 172 title.

In the middle school tournament, Chambersburg (197 points) placed second behind champion Belle Vernon (211).

The Trojans had one champion (Deakon Snavely, 210), who had 4 pins; one runner-up (Isaac Brambley, 94), and three third-place finishers — Justin Deneen at 145, Chris Wilkerson at 170 and Omar Hancey at 210.
