Cumberland Valley 37, Chambersburg 27: The Eagles jumped out to a quick 19-0 lead after four bouts and used that advantage to send the Trojans to a Mid Penn Commonwealth defeat at the Dome on Thursday night.

Connor Killion and Ethan Whitaker opened with pins for CV (1-1, 1-1 MPC). Dom Vogel earned a key win at 145 over Logan Mickey, 7-4, and Jake Mitchell took a major decision at 152.

Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said, “I think the match at 145 was one we felt we had to have. Logan had a slow start, although he picked up the pace toward the end. I think the other key bout was at heavyweight (CV’s Tyler Byerly won 4-0 over Frank Barrientos). Frank will get better from that match. He just needs to get more comfortable in different positions.”

The biggest win for the Trojans (5-5, 1-2 MPC) came at 121, where Zach Sherman  racked up a 7-2 win over Phil Montes. Sherman scored a takedown in each period and gave up only a pair of escapes.

“That was two state-caliber kids going at it, and I think Sherm did a nice job of controlling the pace of the match,” Mentzer said.

Ivan Mixell (160) and Noah Vallentine (172) picked up back-to-back pins for Chambersburg, Ben Hoover notched a fall at 107 and Aiden Hight was given a forfeit win at 215.

Chambersburg hosts the 9th annual MyHOUSE Trojan Wars Tournament next Friday and Saturday, Dec. 29-30, with 51 varsity teams coming to town.
