Last week: The Blue Devils (7-3), the No. 10 seed, defeated Shippensburg, 21-14 … The Mustangs (7-3) earned the No. 7 seed by defeating Spring Grove, 35-25.
District 3 history: Greencastle’s last appearance in the district playoffs was in 2011 … The Blue Devils have a 2-7 all-time record in the playoffs, with the wins coming in 2008 (vs. Kennard-Dale) and 2010 (vs. Hamburg) … South Western has a 6-14 overall mark, and lost 21-20 to Northern York last year.
The opponent: The Mustangs lost 3 straight games early in the season to New Oxford, Dallastown and Central York, but have now won 5 straight … They finished 4-2 in the York-Adams Section I … South Western appears to have a strong passing attack, and is balanced by some decent rushing stats … The Mustangs have scored 30.9 points and allowed 16.6, while Greencastle has scored 22.8 and allowed 18.2 … SW’s quarterback is Bryce Graham and he’s put up some good numbers: 131-for-225 (58%), 1,577 yards, 13 TDs, 8 int. … Seven Mustang receivers have caught at least 14 passes, led by Tommy Putman (17-335, 20.9 yards per catch, 2 TDs), Cade Baumgardner (23-190, 3) and Declan Smith (14-295, 3) … Running back Austin Rollman has carried 184 times for 944 yards and a whopping 17 scores.
Coach’s view: “South Western sets up their passing with a good run game — and they can spread the ball around to all those receivers,” Greencastle coach Devin McCauley said. “They are playing good football right now and have been scoring some points. We need to be balanced on offense. We have to establish the run game and pass when we want to, not when we need to. They see a lot of spread teams in their conference, so maybe that’ll be an advantage for us. We’re excited to be in the playoffs. But it’s hard to evaluate your opponent, which makes it a crap shoot.”
Unsung: J.D. Flynn (jr., 6-0, 215). Flynn contributed 13 tackles last week and has 74 for the season. McCauley said, “He’s definitely been very consistent — he started all 10 games and he works well with Logan Shifflett at inside linebacker.
