GREENCASTLE — The game plan was drawn up and executed nearly perfectly by the Greencastle-Antrim football team Friday night.
The Blue Devils put together their best run game in several weeks, took an early lead, and did a good job against Gettysburg’s potent offense in a 37–20 Mid Penn Colonial victory at Kaley Field.
Greencastle coach Devin McCauley said, “Last week (after a 25-0 loss to Susquehanna Twp.) I was down in the dumps — we couldn’t seem to do anything right. But tonight we did some good things early and played old school Greencastle football.”
That would mean running the ball, which the Blue Devils (6-2, 3-2 MPC) did well. They ran the ball 47 times and picked up 311 yards.
“When you can run the ball, it makes everything else easier,” McCauley said. “And we made some big plays in our passing game, too.”
Xzavier Ramsey led the way on the ground with 21 carries for 142 yards and touchdowns runs of 24, 6 and 3 yards.
McCauley said, “The backs ran hard. I was extremely happy with how the inside guys on the line and the perimeter guys blocked in this game. We controlled the line of scrimmage.”
The Blue Devils ran out to a 23-0 lead until Gettysburg (4-4, 3-2 MPC) ran back a kickoff before halftime. Surzano Solomon had a 15-yard scoring run, Carter Coons had a 6-yard TD run and Ramsey sailed in from 24 yards out. Andrew Bowers added a 39-yard field goal.
“We really got it going in the first half,” McCauley said.
Greencastle traded touchdowns with the Warriors in the second half to maintain their lead, with Ramsey scoring both times.
“Our defense did a nice job of forcing a couple of punts, and then we were able to run the ball,” McCauley said.
G-A quarterback Logan Alvey hit on 7 of 14 passes for 92 yards, with 4 of them going to Carter McCauley for 69 yards. Coons added 86 yards to the rushing numbers.
Greencastle travels to Mechanicsburg to play the Wildcats next Friday.
