WAYNESBORO — Greencastle-Antrim packed all of its points into a span of 3:32 in the third quarter Friday night.
But that scoring burst proved to be enough to secure a Mid Penn Colonial victory over rival Waynesboro, 17-10, at Buchanan Auto Park Stadium and raise the Blue Devils’ record to 4-0 (1-0 MPC).
“Ii was happy with how we played in the second half,” G-A coach Devin McCauley said, “and the defense had its best effort all game — they were physical.”
Greencastle trailed the Indians (1-3, 0-1 MPC) at haftime, 3-0, when Andrew Soffe drilled a 40-yard field field goal with one second left in the second quarter.
The Blue Devils came out in the third quarter and tied the game on a 34-yard field goal by Andrew Bowers. The defense then caused a fumble and recovered it on the ‘Boro 27.
A little razzle dazzle on the next play put the Blue Devils ahead. They used a flea flicker in which QB Logan Alvey hands off to the halfback, who hands it to the slotback, who shovels it back to Alvey. In this case, Alvey threw the ball to Carter McCauley for a 27-yad score and a 10-3 lead.
“That was really big,” coach McCauley said. “It was a sudden change in momentum.”
And Greencastle kept it going when the defense forced Waynesboro into a quick three-and-out. Two plays after receiving a punt, G-A made it 17-3 on a 51-yard run by Carter Coons.
McCauley said, “The offensive line picked up on their blocking in the second half and the backs ran hard.”
The Indians took advantage of a lost fumble for G-A and a short field, and eventually made it 17-10 when “Tank” Benedict scored from 2 yards out with 10:24 left.
But Waynesboro never threatened again. Shortly after being forced to punt from its own 1-yard line, ‘Boro gave Greencastle a short field and the Blue Devils kept the ball, eventually taking a knee at the Indian 4.
Xzavier Ramsey carried the ball 19 times for 175 yards to lead the Greencastle offense.
McCauley said, “It was not the cleanest game — we turned the ball over four times (three fumbles, 1 interception) and had 55 yards in penalties. But I am definitely happy we got the win.”
The Blue Devils host East Pennsboro (4-0, 1-0 MPC) next Friday in an early-season Colonial showdown.
