BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Chambersburg claims title: The Trojans put four runners in the top 24 places and claimed the team title at the PennTrackXC Invitational at Kutztown University on Saturday.
Chambersburg scored 66 points to bypass runners-up Exeter Township and Mendham, N.J. , each of which scored 114.
“It was a nice meet to cap off a nice week,” Trojan coach John Ambrosio said. “Not everybody had a great day, but everybody had a solid day.”
Chambersburg’s Ari Snyder covered the 5,000-meter course in a time of 16:14.4 to hold off Lewisburg’s Jonathan Hess by just under a second for first place.
The next four Trojan runners were Aiden Alleman in eighth (17:02.4), Liam Kirkpatrick in 13th (17.10.1), Owen Shrader in 20th (17:14.9) and Kaden Rife in 24th (17:33.2).
Ambrosio said, “Exeter was ranked ninth in the state at the start of the season and Council Rock South (4th place) was 11th, and we outscored them by a lot. I don’t think we’ll be under the radar any more.”
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
Trojans place third: In the PennTrackXC Invitational at Kutztown University on Saturday, Chambersburg produced two of the top six runners and placed third in the team standings.
Madelyn Koons ran a 5.000-meter time of 20:13.9 to take fifth and teammate Lexi Boyd was sixth in 20:19.0 to pace Chambersburg.
Trojan coach Chris Monheim said, “I was very pleased with the girls’ efforts. The meet wasn’t as large as usual, but there were some good teams there and we challenged them all.”
Severna Park, Md. took first and Pennridge also scored 66 points, but lost a tiebreaker. Chambersburg scored 90 points.
Other high finishers for the Trojans were Samantha Faust (24th, 20:15.8), Brook Boone (27th, 22:22.1), Dana Rosenberry (28th, 22:26.9) and Natalie Quinn (29th, 22:32.9).
“Koons and Boyd gave us a great 1-2 up front,” Monheim said. “We are really going to have to work on keeping the time gaps small, but I know this team can do that, and we should be very strong by the end of the season.”
BOYS SOCCER
Manheim Township 3, Chambersburg 2: The Trojans lost a 2-0 lead with 10 minutes remaining and eventually fell by a goal to the Blue Streaks in a non-league game on the road Saturday.
“In the last 10 minutes, we had two penalty kicks called against us — a lack of discipline on defense cost us the game,” Chambersburg coach Corey Grove said. “We have to get better at not diving in and being patient defensively. That’s three PKs against us in two games.”
The Trojans (1-2) took the lead on goals by Michael Cespedes in the 25th minute and Luca Gaisbauer in the 48th, while Mario Wiseman and Izhais produced assists.
Both teams took 5 shots, and MT led in corner kicks, 9-2. Trojan keeper Drew Cover made 3 saves.
Grove said, “It’s a game of fine margins, where we had other good chances and didn’t finish them.”
