G-A roundup: X-C teams split with Waynesboro

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Greencastle-Antrim 24, Waynesboro 31: The Blue Devils produced the top 3 finishers and that went a long way toward a Mid Penn Colonial victory over the Indians on the road Tuesday afternoon in their first dual meet of the season.

Hayden Parks and Joel Amstutz finished together to win the race in a time of 18:52, and Cash Monn took third place in 19:21.

Waynesboro had the next four placewinners, led by Jonathan Helman in fourth (20:26) and Noah Buchstle (20:29) in fifth.

GIRLS COUNTRY
Waynesboro 28, Greencastle-Antrim 28; G-A 19, West Perry 39; Waynesboro 16, West Perry 45: The Maidens went 2-0 in Mid Penn Colonial meets Tuesday afternoon, beating West Perry easily and winning by tiebreaker over the Blue Devils.

G-A (1-1) also defeated the Mustangs.

The Blue Devils had the 1-2 finishers in Claire Paci (23-15) and Katherine Board (24:31). But the Maidens had the next two in Bella Reufle (25:18) and Maddie Reufel (25:47), in front of G-A’s Sophia Young (26:42). The next three runners to cross the line were from Waynesboro.

Big Spring 3, Greencastle-Antrim 2: The Bulldogs pulled out a win in the fifth game Tuesday evening to pull out a surprise victory over the Blue Devils in a Mid Penn Colonial match at G-A.

“We gave Big Spring a huge gift with a combined 45 hitting and serving errors,” Greencastle coach Corry Eagler said. “Once that gets cleaned up, the outcomes should improve.”

Big Spring won 25-18 in the first game, but the Blue Devils took a 2-1 lead with wins of 30-28 and 25-18. The Bulldogs tied it with a fourth-game win of 25-17, then grabbed the win with a 15-12 victory.

For G-A (1-1, 0-1 MPC), Lily Kauffman had 14 service points, 5 aces and 2 blocks, and Abby Eagler had 24 kills, 10 points and 17 digs.

Also for Greencastle, Alaina Garling had 21 assists and 11 digs, Kylie Kerns had 25 assists, Wren Roberts came up with 11 digs, Mia Jones had 8 kills and Breanna Woodring had 17 digs.

Shippensburg 6, Greencastle-Antrim 2: The Blue Devils hit the road Tuesday afternoon and were defeated by the Greyhounds in a Mid Penn Colonial game.

“As a team, we have to move up and down as a unit,” G-A coach Lorraine Hohl said. “This is challenging, especially in the heat … but we can’t control the weather. We must adapt and control what we can control.

“This week we will fine tune our defensive skills and enhance our offensive abilities.”

Alishya Thurmont assisted on a goal by Ainsley Swindell in the second quarter for Greencastle (1-1, 1-1 MPC), and Thurmond scored in the third period from a pass from Carlee Knepper.
