Chambersburg roundup: Boys lax finishes on win; softball cruises

BOYS LACROSSE
Chambersburg 16, Northern York 4: Despite racking up 8 penalties in the first half, the Trojans managed to take a 7-2 lead over the Polar Bears and rolled to a non-league victory in Dillsburg on Wednesday night.

Shea Makosy

Chambersburg ended the season with a 9-9 record and will finish outside of the District 3 Class 3A playoffs.

Shea Makosy was all over the scorebook in his final game, with one goal, 7 assists, 13 groundballs and 4 caused turnovers, plus he went 15-for-19 on faceoffs.

He finished the season with a school record in single-season groundballs (129), 10 better than Carson Forrester last year, and Makosy broke his own school record in turnovers caused with 55 (he had 53 last year). He led the Trojans in points with 57 (25 goals, 32 assists) and won 65% of his faceoffs.

“It was far the most productive season we’ve ever had from a defender,” Chambersburg coach Joey Wilmot said. “Shea is not the fastest, most athletic or most natural lacrosse player, but he has put in more work in the past few years to get where he is than anyone else.

“Every time he steps on the field, whether its in a game or practice, or just in his own training, he does it with intentionality and a competitive fire that is unmatched. All of his accomplishments are truly earned.”

Sam Kunkleman scored 7 goals and led the team in goals with 41. Riley Harmon put together 3 goals, 3 assists, 3 groundballs and 3 turnovers caused.

Also for the Trojans, Logan Mulkey had 2 goals and an assist, Ryan Cosey, Garrett Iser and Quinn Makosky had a goal each and Brax Makosy had an assist. Owen Shearer produced 4 groundballs and 6 caused turnovers, Chase Martin had 3 each of groundballs and turnovers, and goalie Kristian Freeman had a season-high 14 saves.

SOFTBALL
Chambersburg 12, Red Land 0: The Trojans took care of business Wednesday afternoon in a Mid Penn Commonwealth contest in Lewisberry against the Patriots, scoring 6 runs in the first 2 innings and then getting 6 more in the fourth to end the game after 5 innings.

Abagail Newman

Chambersburg (16-2, 11-2 MPC) has won 7 straight games, including 6 in the last 7 days.

“What more can I say about the heart and grit of this team and doing what they did in those six games?” Trojan coach Chris Skultety said. “This is a special group that stays together as one, and every one of them is doing what it takes to get it done.”

In the top of the first inning, after 2 outs, Sam Paetow and Morgan Stockslager clubbed back-to-back home runs. Addison Gsell drew a walk and then Saleena Null, Abagail Newman and Jaden Stull had consecutive hits to produce 2 more runs.

Sam Paetow was 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBIs, Newman was 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBIs, Stockslager was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 runs knocked in, Bree Paetow was 2-for-3 with a double and Gsell doubled.

Kylee Miller started and went 4 innings, giving up 2 hits and no walks, while striking out 6. Kori Leedy pitched the final hitless inning.

Skultety said, “Our defense continues to be amazing and our pitching is right where we thought it’d be. A couple of different hitters are starting to get hot, which makes us even tougher to beat.

“I’m very proud of these young ladies and what we’ve accomplished so far, no one is satisfied yet. We knew the bigger games are coming and they will be ready.”

Kamden Mongan

Red Land 3, Chambersburg 1: The Trojans could muster just two hits and were handed a Mid Penn Commonwealth defeat Wednesday afternoon at Greene Township Park by the Patriots.

Reed Myers

BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Cumberland Valley 3, Chambersburg 0: The Trojans finished their season against the top-ranked team in District 3 Class 3A and were defeated by the Eagles in a Mid Penn Commonwealth match at CASHS Field House.

Chambersburg coach Ray Frazer said, “Cumberland Valley (14-0) is one of the best teams in the state and it definitely showed. They run a very fast offense and we struggled to keep up. They have a very good setter and he knows how to run their offense.”

The games were 25-14, 25-12 and 27-25.

“We were able to make a little more headway in the last game, but fell short,” Frazer said.

For the Trojans, who finish 2-12 (1-11 MPC), Reed Myers had a well-rounded night, putting up 11 assists, 9 digs and an ace.

Andrew Holtry picked up 6 kills and had a block, while Reid Leidig had 3 kills and 9 digs. Kerlyn Reyes also added 6 digs.
