G-A roundup: Softball and baseball stay on hot streaks

BASEBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 10, Big Spring 4: The Blue Devils made senior day a celebration by scoring in every inning on their way to a Mid Penn Colonial victory over the Bulldogs on Tuesday afternoon at home.

Darren Kline

“It was nice to jump out early, and then we continued to add to that lead,” G-A coach Eric Shaner said. “It was a little emotional before the game because the seven seniors have been with us for so long. It was great to send them out with a victory.”

Greencastle (13-4, 9-4 MPC), winners of eight straight games, got contributions up and down the lineup at the plate. Carter Reid (3 runs, triple); Aidan Grudzinski (2 RBIs); Darren Kline (RBI) and Carter McCauley (2 RBIs) were all 2-for-3.

Also contributing were Ethan Ford (2 RBIs), Ryan Farrow (2 runs), Jerek Szaflarski (RBI) and Blake Remenick with one hit apiece.

Jace Szaflarski earned the pitching victory, going 5.2 innings and allowing two earned runs. Austin Simmons finished up with 1.2 innings of 2-hit relief.

Shaner said, “Jace grinded out some tough innings. He’s picked us up so many times that it was good to see us give him some run support.”

SOFTBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 8, Big Spring 5: The Blue Devils made up for an earlier blowout loss to the Bulldogs by rallying for 4 runs in the top of the seventh inning and finishing off a key Mid Penn Colonial win Tuesday afternoon in Newville.

Emma Broadwater

Greencastle (14-3, 11-2 MPC) can lock up at least a tie for the Colonial title if it can defeat West Perry on Thursday. The Blue Devils and Northern each have 2 losses, but G-A holds the tiebreaker with two wins over the Bears and that would put them in the Mid Penn tournament.

“This was a great game,” Greencastle coach Mark DeCarli said. “The girls didn’t give up and kept plugging away.”

Trailing 5-4 entering the seventh, Sydney Orndorff led off with a single and promptly stole second base. Caroline Logsdon advanced her to third with a grounder, then Makayla Jerin hit another grounder. The Bulldogs tried to throw out Orndorff at home plate, but she was safe to tie the score.

After an intentional walk to Meadow Gambacurta, Abby Stouffer hit a fly ball to center to bring in the go-ahead run. Then Emma Broadwater slammed a double to right field that scored the last two runs.

DeCarli said, “Broadwater came through with a big hit with that double. Mackenzie (Wingert) came in the first inning when Sophie wasn’t getting her inside pitch called and did well. They had the bases loaded and no outs and she got a double play (on a line drive to Stouffer) and they only got two runs. That was huge.”

Gambacurta was 3-for-3, Orndorff went 3-for-4, Jerin was 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs and Logsdon was 2-for-4.
