Chambersburg roundup: Girls lacrosse stumps Gettysburg

GIRLS LACROSSE
Chambersburg 8, Gettysburg 5: The Trojans were missing a key player, but others picked up their play and it resulted in a non-league victory over the Warriors on Monday afternoon in Gettysburg.

“With Ridglee Flohr out with a concussion she suffered in our last game, some girls stepped up majorly today,” Chambersburg coach Keara Allshouse said. “We did a really good job of playing a high pressure defense and using the clock to our advantage on attack.”

Gabriella Sabatino led the Trojans (4-11) with 5 goals, while Taylor Mickey, Ellisa Gamby-Mickey and Hanna Woolf all chipped in with a goal a piece.

Ellie Nicklas was sharp in goal, stopping 16 shots taken by Gettysburg (1-16).

SOFTBALL
Chambersburg 18, Cedar Cliff 3: The Trojans put up a big crooked number in the first inning (11) and cruised to a 3-inning Mid Penn Commonwealth victory over the Colts at Norlo Park on Monday afternoon.

Morgan Stockslager

“It was a great day for our four seniors — Morgan Stockslager, Jaden Stull, Carly Benedict and Kylee Miller,” Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. “The girls were a little emotional during the pregame ceremony, but quickly turned that into focus and came out swinging the bats.”

The Trojans (14-2, 9-2 MPC) scored 3 more times in the second and, after Cedar Cliff (3-10) scored 3 in the third, came back with 5 more to end the game.

Skultety said, “The girls were incredible with adjustments and hitting the ball up the middle, and hitting some rockets. They have done an amazing job in this stretch of games so far and we are looking forward to a big game tomorrow (at home vs. Mifflin County).”

Karley Skultety was 3-for-3 with a double and drove in 3 runs, Bree Paetow was 3-for-3 with a triple and double, Sam Paetow was 2-for-2 and knocked in 4 runs, Addison Gsell and Morgan Lehman cracked doubles and Benedict banked 2 RBIs.

Miller (10-1) started and tossed 2 innings of hitless ball to earn the win.

The Trojans have moved into the No. 1 spot in the District 3 power rankings. Central Dauphin is No. 2 and Cumberland Valley is No. 4.

BASEBALL
Cedar Cliff 2, Chambersburg 1: In a tight pitchers’ duel, the Colts plated a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to slide past the Trojans in a Mid Penn Commonwealth contest in New Cumberland on Monday afternoon.

Adriano Methner

Wyatt Kissel pitched a gem for Chambersburg (5-12, 3-9 MPC). He allowed only 3 hits, 3 walks and 2 runs (one earned) while striking out 8.

The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning, when the Trojans scored a run. Chase Stenger drew a leadoff walk and Adriano Methner came in as a courtesy runner. Jake Folmar then bunted Methner to second base. On a fielder’s choice grounder, Methner advanced to third, then scored when a throw from first base trying to get him was thrown away.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Colts (10-5) tied it up on a hit batter, an error and a base hit. Cedar Cliff sent the second runner home, but he was thrown out at the plate on throws from Brandon Pattillo ro Stenger to Brady Deneen.

In the seventh, Kissel (0-5) issued walks to the first two batters, a bunt moved them up and a single ended the game.

Chambersburg coach Scott Folmar said, “Wyatt was only at 74 pitches through six innings and we wanted to ride him as long as we could. Those two walks really hurt. He’s had some terrible luck all year. He’s thrown well in all but one game and we just can’t score any runs for him.”

The hard-luck Trojans, in their 12 losses, have lost by one run four times and by two runs four times.

BOYS LACROSSE
Chambersburg 16, Gettysburg 1: The Trojans honored 9 seniors Monday night at Trojan Stadium and in the process dominated Gettysburg in a non-league game.

“Seven of those seniors are defenders, so we had to play some guys out of position to get them all on the field together,” Chambersburg coach Joey Wilmot said.

Senior Shea Makosy came up with 1 goal, 3 assists, 13 groundballs, 5 caused turnovers and went 17-for-17 on faceoffs.

Wilmot said, “He assisted both of his brothers on goals and became the first player in program history to record 100 career caused turnovers. He’s also the fourth one to have 200 groundballs.”

Among other seniors, Brax Makosy had 1 goal, 4 assists and 4 groundballs; Owen Shearer scored 2 goals; Parker King had a goal and an assist; Carter Mader scored a goal and Chase Martin had 12 groundballs and 4 caused turnovers. Luke Herbert, Luke Cody and Kaden Drawbaugh helped out on defense.

Goalie Kristian Freeman made 10 saves, including the 300th of his career, the fifth goalie to reach that figure.

In other stats, Sam Kunkleman posted 5 goals and an assist, Logan Mulkey had 1 goal and 4 assists, Ryan Cosey, Matt Tucker, Quinn Makosy and Blake Dupont each scored a goal and Jackson Beardsley had an assist and 4 groundballs.
