Trojan boys 4 x 100 relay sets school, Roddick record

SHIPPENSBURG — A promise made, and a promise delivered.

The boys 4 x 100 relay team from Chambersburg made a bold prediction prior to the 96th annual Jack Roddick Invitational track & field meet at Shippensburg University on Saturday. And then they made good on that prediction.

“The guys promised they would set a school record today in the 4 x 100 relay,” Trojan coach Bob Walker said. “I knew they could do that, but 42.01 is really fast.”

The team of Kason Besecker, Darion Baumgardner, Blake Mallast and Antonio Harrison II blitzed the field to capture first place, beating Parkland (42.28) to the finish line. Their time also set a new record for the Roddick, and is one of the fastest times in the state this year.

The previous school record was 42.16, set in 2019 by Jayden Jones, Jonathan Jeffrey, Donovan Moses and Tyeshawn Worrell.

Chambersburg’s Camryn Kiser earned the team’s other first-place finish on Saturday in the first event of the day. She raced to a time of 10:47.11 to defeat Lacey Danilovito of Riverside (10:49.83) in the 3200.

At the halfway mark, Kiser trailed Danilovito by less than half a second.

Trojan coach Chris Monheim said, “Camy had a great race and her time was her personal best. It’s one of the best times in the state at the moment.”

Jillian Sydnor of Shippensburg picked up the area’s other victory, placing first in the 400 with a time of 57.34.

Greencastle-Antrim’s Claire Paci came close to a pair of wins, but had to settle for second place in the 1600 and the 800. Her 1600 time of 5:08.15 was short of the 5:07.68 by Dallastown’s Kailey Granger, and her 2:19.29 was second to Cumberland Valley’s Ashley Pines (2:17.76) in the 800.

In other girls competition, Ship’s Alyssa Trn tied for third in the high jump (4-10), True Benchoff of Waynesboro was fourth in the 300 hurdles (48.76) and Chambersburg’s Natalia Holmes took fifth in the 100 in 12.58.

Dalton Noblit of Greencastle was a runner-up in the boys 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 6:33.47.

Three area athletes placed second — Jermere Jones of Chambersburg in the 110 hurdles (14.65), the Trojans’ Peter Mertz in the shot put (51-9) and G-A’s Hayden Parks in the 3200 (9:24.55). Seth Stouffer of the Blue Devils picked up fourth in the 100 in 10.76.

The meet was suspended by a storm for nearly two hours and some teams, including Chambersburg, did not return when the competition finished.

The Trojans were 8th in the boys team standings with 26 points and G-A was 9th with 21. In the girls standings, Chambersburg took 9th with 20 points, Greencastle was 14th with 16 points and Ship was 19th with 14.5.
