Trojans pull out softball win over Central York in 10 innings

FAYETTEVILLE — It must have been a scary feeling being a baserunner in Thursday afternoon’s softball game at Norlo Park, just waiting for the next out to be made.

Chambersburg had two runners doubled off base, hit into three double plays in all and had another picked off base. But Central York countered by having four baserunners thrown out in a variety of ways.

Eventually, the game-winning run was able to score, and the Trojans took a 3-2 non-league win on Sam Paetow’s booming hit in the bottom of the 10th inning.

“That might have been the worst display of baserunning I’ve seen,” said Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety, who could afford a chuckle since his team won. “Thankfully, Central York had just as many mistakes. It was a weird game.”

In the top of the ninth, the Panthers (2-4) got Bri Twigg to second base with one out. J.J. Stiffler sent a base hit to rightfield. Morgan Stockslager tracked the ball down, then fired it toward home plate. Catcher Sam Paetow had to reach to her right to snag the ball, then took two steps back to the plate to tag Twigg out.

“I took a look at (Twigg) when the ball was being picked up and she wasn’t too far off third, so I was thinking, ‘We might have a play here,”‘ Paetow said.

Skultety said, “Morgan got to the ball quickly, got rid of the ball fast and fired a seed, and that was a great tag by Sam.”

In the 10th, the Panthers started the inning with Olivia Holtzman on second base and moved her to third on a bunt. But Trojan pitcher Kylee Miller stranded her with two straight easy pop-ups.

In the bottom of the 10th, Chambersburg (4-1) began with Bree Paetow at second base. Karley Skultety bunted a chopper to the first baseman, whose throw to try to get Paetow at third was late. That left it up to Sam Paetow, who ripped a lined shot over the head of the centerfielder to end the game.

Sam Paetow said, “I just wanted to stay calm and collected, and think that this is why I put in the time in the offseason. I just wanted to hit the ball hard somewhere.”

Miller allowed seven hits, did not walk a batter and struck out nine. She did give up triples in the fifth and sixth innings that each led to a run.

The Trojans manufactured a run in the third. Lauren Allison singled to left, stole second, moved up on a fielder’s choice and scored on a passed ball.

Trailing 2-1, Chambersburg tied it up in the sixth. Bree Paetow reached on a bad-hop single, then stole second. Karley Skultety bunted up the first base line, avoided a tag, and when the ball was thrown away at first, Paetow scored.

With the bases loaded and just one out, it appeared the Trojans would take the lead when Saleen Null hit a line drive to centerfield, which would have scored the runner from third. But Central York’s Ella Heap fired the ball to second base and caught Morgan Stockslager off the base.

Coach Skulktety said, “I’ll take a win any time, because you can learn lessons better than you could with a loss. We were hammering the ball at the plate, but the baserunning mistakes were keeping us from scoring as much as we should have.

“Fortunately, Kylee was a trouper to the end — she kept us in the game.”

NOTES: Sam Paetow had 3 hits for Chambersburg and Abagail Newman had 2 … Paetow also picked 2 runners off at first base, and caught another stealing at second … Stiffler and Holtzman each had 2 hits for the Panthers … Skultety said, “They’re a good team. Their record isn’t good, but they’ve lost to all playoff-caliber teams.” … Skultety also said, “We wanted to say to our team photographer Jeff Probst, who just had a heart attack, that we’re thinking about him and send our prayers.”
