Greencastle-Antrim 2, Northern York 1: Sophie Layton pitched a four-hitter and Meadow Gambacurta bombed a game-winning home run to help the Blue Devils remain unbeaten with a Mid Penn Colonial win over the Polar Bears in Dillsburg on Tuesday.
Greencastle (6-0, 5-0 MPC) scored a run in the third when Alexis Jones walked and came around on a steal, a fly ball and an errant throw. Northern tied the game in the bottom of the inning.
But it could have been worse.
“Northern had the bases loaded with no outs when Jones made a spectacular diving catch,” G-A coach Mark DeCarli said. “They scored a run on it, but we got out of it. Our defense had their best game of the year, especially the outfield.”
Gambacurta did her damage in the top of the fourth, blasting a ball over the centerfield fence to give her team the lead.
Layton did the rest, limiting the Bears to just four hits and two walks. Northern had several threats, but the defense made some good plays behind Layton to preserve the victory.
“To hold Northern to one run was great,” DeCarli said. “Sophie pitched a really nice game.

Northern York 14, Greencastle-Antrim 0: The Polar Bears took advantage of some loose Blue Devil defense and routed G-A in a Mid Penn Colonial game in Greencastle on Tuesday afternoon.
The Blue Devils made at least six errors, leading to a slew of Northern runs. The Bears went down 1-2-3 in the first against Jace Szaflarski, but scored 5 runs in the second, 4 in the third, 3 in the fourth and 2 more in the fifth to finish off the game.
“They played solid and we played one of the worst games since I’ve been here,” G-A coach Eric Shaner said. “We did not make the routine plays today in the field, and we carried that into the batter’s box and tried to hit 11-run home runs.
“Our discipline and resolve were tested today and I’m not sure we passed. We just have to flush today and come back Thursday.”
Greencastle (3-3, 2-3 MPC) managed only two hits in the game, by Aiden Grudzinski and Carter McCauley.
