G-A roundup: Jace Szaflarski nearly throws a gem

BASEBALL

The Bubblers’ only hit came from the leadoff batter in the top of the seventh, and an error occurred on the next batter. But Szaflarski recorded outs (strikeout, pop-up, grounder) on the next three batters to preserve the shutout.

“That hit was a little ground ball that, if it had bounced the same way it did for the fifth bounce as the first four, would have been caught, but it just got under our glove,” G-A coach Eric Shaner said.

Szaflarski struck out 10 batters.

Shaner said, “We were saying last week that we needed him to be the stopper, and he was certainly the ace today. He threw good pitches in good spots, and he put batters away. The only ball they really hit was a line drive to our centerfielder.”

The Blue Devils (2-2, 1-2 MPC) got plenty of offense to support their pitcher. Aiden Grudzinski was 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs, Ethan Ford was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in, Briggs Remenick was 2-for-3, scored three times and hit a triple, and Carter Reid had a single and RBI.

Kaidyn ZImmerman was on the mound for Greencastle (4-0, 3-0 MPC) in the seventh with a 6-4 lead, and Boiling Springs had runners on second and third with two outs. A passed ball allowed one run to score, but Zimmerman struck out the next to end the game.

Caroline Logsdon had a big day at the plate with 3 hits in 5 at-bats, and she drove in two runs.

Sydney Orndorff and Makayla Jerin each went 2-for-5 with an RBI and Bailey Leckron was 2-for-4.

Zimmerman pitched the whole game, other than two batters in the sixth when the Bubblers scored 4 runs. She allowed 6 hits and 2 earned runs.
