CORNWALL — Chambersburg pulled off one huge upset in the PIAA Class 6A boys basketball playoffs.
Archbishop Wood was determined to not let it happen again Wednesday night.
The Vikings were simply more talented, had too many weapons on offense and pummeled the Trojans on the boards to capture a 72-44 victory in a second-round game at Cedar Crest H.S.
Chambersburg finishes its season with a 16-12 record. Archbishop Wood (18-8) will play Coatesville (20-9) in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
“I think the rebounding was pretty big,” Trojan coach Shawn Shreffler said. “When we beat Plymouth-Whitemarsh (Saturday), we outrebounded them 44-32. But they hurt us tonight with rebounding and it led to everything for them.”
The Vikings were crisp on offense, making swift passes and finding open players. The guards were able to drive and either finish at the rim or make a pass to an open player.
And they also hit the offensive glass really hard, leading to quite a few second chance points.
“For us, defensive rebounding ignites our offense, and we weren’t getting those,” Shreffler said. “We needed to stop their transition game, we needed to contest their perimeter shots and we had to protect the paint. But they got a lot of easy breakouts and did a good job of getting up getting putbacks.”
The Vikings hit 6 of 9 shots in the first quarter and led 18-12, with J.J. Kelly scoring all 12 of Chambersburg’s points.
Wood took off in the second period, outscoring the Trojans 24-5. Philadelphia Catholic League MVP Jalil Bethea showed off all facets of his game — he scored 18 first-half points (24 for the game), consistently hit open teammates on fast breaks and was strong on defense.
But he was not alone. The Vikings had eight players score in the first half, and for the game, six different players combined for eight 3-pointers. That made it difficult for Chambersburg to cover everybody on defense.
With a big lead at halftime (42-17), The Vikings outscored Chambersburg by only three points in the second half, but the game hit the mercy rule protocol just before the third period ended.
Shreffler said, “You’d think after just beating the District 1 champion, you might get an easier team in the next round, but that was not the case. (Wood) played a really good schedule — we did, too, but not as good as theirs. That Philly league is really, really good.”
Kelly finished with 20 points for the Trojans, and Jacob Bassham was next with 7.
Shreffler said, “I feel like with about five or six games left in the season, we turned it around and got better. And that allowed us to have a home game for districts, which was really nice.
“This team established some really good footprints that people will remember for a long, long time. Like the win over P-W and the big third quarter against Carlisle. We had a great group of seniors and there will be a lot of good memories.”
NOTES: Josh Reed contributed 13 points for Archbishop Wood … The Trojans shot only 33% … Chambersburg’s seniors included starters Bassham, Carter Fogal and Sedrick Vessah, plus Treyton Sarvis, Talon Brewer and Konner Whorley.
