Ship’s Frontino advances in PIAA wrestling

HERSHEY — Shippensburg senior Dominic Frontino was the only one of a contingent of six Franklin County wrestlers to reach the quarterfinals of the PIAA Wrestling Championships.

Frontino racked up a 15-2 major decision over Gavyn Beck of Franklin Regional on Thursday evening at Giant Center. He led 5-0 after one period and 8-0 after two.

In Friday afternoon’s 160-pound quarterfinals, Frontino (33-1) will face Gavin Pascoe of Perkiomen Valley (40-8).

Chambersburg started the day with four competitors, but all four were knocked out of the championship bracket.

“Kind of a long day,” Trojan coach Matt Mentzer said. “We performed like we have all year and some of our kids put themselves in good positions against good kids. But we came out on the wrong end of a couple.”

In the preliminary round at 189, the Trojans’ Aiden Hight was a 10-5 winner over Caleb Marzolino of Abington Heights. After Marzolino went ahead 2-1 with 22 seconds left in the second period on a takedown, Hight reversed him to his back in a headlock for four points to lead 6-2.

Avery Kuhns took a 4-0 lead on a takedown and back points against Maxwell Roy of St. Joseph’s Prep at 285, but Roy was able to reverse Kuhns and pin him at the 1:26 mark.

In first-round matches, Chambersburg’s Luke Mentzer (127) and Zach Evans (215) suffered defeats, and Hight was also beaten.

Mentzer gave up a takedown and three back points in the first period in a 7-0 loss to Andrew Binni of Canon-McMillan, and Evans was taken down with 13 seconds left in the second period by Calvin Lachman of Quakertown to fall behind 7-4 in a 12-5 loss.

Hight ran into unbeaten Vaughn Spencer of Pine Richland and took a 7-1 defeat, thanks to three Spencer takedowns.

Shippensburg’s Diesel Koser also captured a win in the prelim round, 7-3 over Augustus Warke of Bethlehem Catholic. Koser struck for a takedown and back points early in the first period, and added two more nearfall points with 0:18 left to lead 6-2 after one.

In the first round, Koser fell 5-0 to Eli Makel of Waynesburg Central.

In the first round of consolations, Mentzer fell 1-0 to Shane McFillin of Bethlehem Catholic as McFillin rode for the entire third period; Evans rolled to an 11-2 major decision over Teague Conover of Spring Grove thanks to three takedowns and two sets of backs; and Kuhns scored a takedown with 1 second left in sudden victory to beat Peyton Kearns of Mifflin County, 2-0.

Hight, Evans, Kuhns and Koser will wrestle in the second round of consolations on Friday afternoon.
