Trojans’ Derek Estep claims 2nd career Dist. 3 swim gold

NEW KINGSTOWN — Chambersburg junior Derek Estep has another District 3 gold medal to add to the one he won a year ago.

Estep buried the competition in the boys Class 3A 200 freestyle to win a district race for the second straight year on Friday evening at Cumberland Valley H.S.

The Trojans had a good day in the pool and stand in fifth place in the team standings.

“The boys are off to a good start to the meet with a good first day overall,” Chambersburg coach Chad White said.

Estep was the No. 1 seed in the 200 free and he posted a time of 1:40.41 to finish ahead of Hershey’s Jason Weller (1:41.28).

White said, “It’s very special anytime you can a district gold medal. He works incredibly hard and it’s great to see him win his second career district gold. It will be fun to watch what he can do at states with a full rest.”

The Trojans’ 200 free relay — Alex Kaczmark, Derek Estep, Brandon Estep and Joseph Decker — placed fourth with a time of 1:38.04.

“Both relays swam well and the 200 free relay has an excellent chance of making states,” White said. “Alex got us off to a good start and Derek, Brandon and Joseph held on for an excellent fourth-place finish.”

In the 100 butterfly, Brandon Estep placed 9th in 52.08 and Kaczmark was 10th in 52.17.

White said, “Brandon and Alex both swam well — Brandon had a lifetime best and Alex was close to one.”

Greencastle-Antrim’s Sean Detwiler placed 13th in the 200 IM in 2;00.35.

In the girls events, Chambersburg’s top finish was by Margot Ritchie in the 200 IM, where she placed 10th in 2:13.16.

Trojan coach Hali Cormany said, “The girls had a good day. It’s been a dew years since a (Chambersburg) relay made it to districts, so it was exciting to have two of them make it. My hope is the experience today will carry into the years to come. The girls were consistent with their swims.”

The 200 free relay placed 13th and the 200 medley relay was 16th. Abby Caltrider also took 23rd in the 100 fly in 1:02.84.

Cormany said, “Margot’s 200 IM was her strongest of the year. Abby finished the season strong, getting close to her personal best. And Layne Rydbom (both relays) came back and swam well after tapering recently.”

Waynesboro’s Eve Phillips picked up a sixth-place finish in the 100 fly in a time of 57.81 and the Maidens’ 200 free relay team placed eighth.
