READING — Chambersburg played at the No. 1 seed in the District 3 Class 6A boys basketball playoffs at Geigle Complex on Friday night.
And the No. 8-seeded Trojans battled to the end before absorbing a 69-58 quarterfinal defeat by Reading.
“I was really proud of our team’s effort tonight,” Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said. “They showed up in a tough environment against, arguably, the best team in the state and went toe-to-toe with them.”
The Trojans (14-10) will now play in the consolation round on Tuesday at York High at 7 p.m. The No. 4 seed Bearcats (18-5) were knocked off by Waynesboro 60-45 on Friday. Reading (25-1) hosts Waynesboro (21-3) on Tuesday at 7.
In the end, Chambersburg could not find a way to stop the Red Knights’ Ruben Rodriguez. The Reading star averages 21 points per game, but he had 17 in the first quarter alone and ended up with a staggering 42 points.
“He was extremely efficient, shooting only 19 times,” Shreffler said.
Rodriguez, a 6-2 guard who will play at Rider next year, added 10 points each in the second and fourth quarters and was held to 5 in the third. He hit a trio of 3-pointers and knocked down 11 of 16 free throws.
For the game, Reading was 21 of 28 at the foul line and the Trojans hurt themselves by hitting only 7 of 17.
Shreffler said, “Despite being in significate foul trouble throughout the game, a variety of guys stepped up and filled their roles unbelievably well, which allowed our team to continue competing at a very high level.”
Jacob Bassham led Chambersburg with 17 points and Sedrick Vessah scored 10. J.J. Kelly was held to just 8 points, but Colton Cornwell helped out with 8 and Talon Brewer scored 6.
For the Red Knights, Aris Rodriguez scored 10 points.
