Chambersburg roundup: Derek Estep claims Mid Penn gold

BOYS SWIMMING
Estep wins 200 free: Chambersburg’s Derek Estep captured first place in the boys 200 freestyle event at the Mid Penn Conference swimming championships on Friday evening at Cumberland Valley H.S.

Estep swam a time of 1:41.21, which was 2.06 seconds under his best this year, to edge Sam Huggins of State College (1:41.54). The Trojans’ Jed Ritchie was fifth in the event (1:45.65).

In the 100 butterfly, Alex Kaczmark placed third (52.10) and Brandon Estep was fourth (52.46). Keagan Myers claimed a fifth place in the diving on Thursday evening.

Chambersburg also placed third in the 200 medley relay and eighth in the 200 free relay. The Trojans sit in fourth place in the team standings.

GIRLS SWIMMING
Trojans in 4th place: After one day of the Mid Penn Conference swimming championships at Cumberland Valley H.S., Chambersburg compiled enough points to be in fourth place.

The Trojans had two swimmers place in the top six: Margot Ritchie, 5th in the 200 IM (2:13.38); and Layne Rydbom, 6th in the 50 freestyle (25.34).

Also Chambersburg was 6th in the 200 free relay and 7th in the 200 medley relay. Addie Zimmerman placed 13th in the diving competition on Thursday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Carlisle 57, Chambersburg 43: Yasmine Abu-Aideh scored 9 of her 24 points in a pivotal first quarter on Friday night to lead the Thundering Herd to a Mid Penn Commonwealth win over the Trojans in Carlisle.

The Herd (11-10) blitzed Chambersburg 23-2 in the first quarter, with Kylee Miller scoring the Trojans’ only points.

Chambersburg, which finishes 5-17 (4-10 MPC) did outscore Carlisle 41-34 in the remaining three quarters.

Riley Evans came within one point of her career high for the Trojans, scoring 13 points. Ella Parker also reached double figures with 10 points.
