Chambersburg roundup: CD sweeps Trojans in hoops

BOYS BASKETBALL
Central Dauphin 49, Chambersburg 39: The Rams shook off a good start by the Trojans and played excellent defense on the way to a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory at CASHS Field House on Friday night as part of the Hoops for Harmony showcase.

Chambersburg (8-5, 3-4 MPC) led early 9-2, but CD (5-7, 4-3 MPC) caught up by the end of the first quarter, then outscored the Trojans 17-8 in the second quarter and held the lead the rest of the way.

“I thought we came out really strong and our focus was good,” Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said. “We got some good shots. But I think you started to see a difference on the glass after that and I don’t think we worked as efficiently for shots as we did early.”

Wayne Fletcher scored all of the Rams’ points in the third quarter and his team increased its lead to 40-29. Fletcher ended with 21 points.

J.J. Kelly scored 9 points in the first quarter and finished with 20 points for the Trojans, who have now lost 3 of their last 4 games. Carter Fogal added 8 points.

Shreffler said, “Clearing the glass on defense, not allowing second chances and being active on the offensive glass is what we try to do every game. But tonight they got a lot of offensive rebounds and putbacks.

“I think we need to be more patient with the ball and do the little extra things that would allow us to get a better shot than what we were taking.”

Chambersburg hosts state power Chester on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. as the Hoops for Harmony holds its second of three days of games.
