NEW KINGSTOWN — Sometimes, the other team is just better.
Cumberland Valley showed its prowess in every facet of the game Tuesday night and took down Chambersburg 55-37 in a Mid Penn Commonwealth boys basketball game at CV’s Dome.
The Eagles (5-0, 2-0 MPC) dominated on the glass, shot 57% from the field and their strong defense limited the Trojans (4-2, 2-1 MPC) to just 36% from the field.
“They played tonight like they’re the best team in the league,” Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said. “We’re not there yet, but I believe in our guys and they will bounce back.”
CV opened in a 2-3 zone and the Trojans had some success against that, with J.J. Kelly putting up 10 first-quarter points to help give his team a 15-13 win after one period.
But the Eagles switched to a man-to-man defense, kept dominating the boards, and outscored Chambersburg 11-1 in the second quarter. The Trojans were 0-for-9 shooting in that frame.
Shreffler said, “I felt their physicality played a role in us not being able to get to the rim. They are very physical, opportunistic, and they execute extremely well. They’re a very good basketball team.”
Chambersburg had trouble with Cumberland Valley guard JD Hunter, who was able to slash through the defense for five layups, hit a three ball, and drew numerous fouls. He started out cold at the line, but ended up 9-for-13 at the stripe and totaled 20 points.
Jackson Boone was very active inside, scoring 8 first-half points and ripping down a batch of rebounds. He got into foul trouble in the second half and wasn’t much of a factor, but his teammates did not allow the Trojans to pull closer.
Kelly ended up with 16 points, including a pair of thunderous dunks, to lead Chambersburg.
